Said in your intro, I'm the chair of the DA in Kozulu Netal, so I'm you know very acutely involved in the campaign here. And I think that voters are looking far beyond what maybe Prince Michele spoke to you about groups and so on. I think that they are looking to make a clean break. And there was a really good example, Alec, if I can give you a political example, because I am also a politician. There's a ward.
Called Ward 64 in Etiquenne. There was a by-election there. It was an interesting ward because in 2021 it voted for the DA, but then the ANC was closely behind that. In 2024, all of that support went over to the MK from the ANC, and the DA stayed at the same. And then we had a by-election last year, and I was worried we may not actually hold it. Highly contested ward.
And when the results came out, something interesting happened. The DA went up 20% and MK went down 20% and the ANC stayed at 10%. And when I went and did some research and we started polling and looking at that, these are voters that have gone from ANC to MK to DA. I said, KZN is the only province in the country where that happens. You can be an ANC member. You can wear an MK shirt and go and vote for the DA.
It's the only province where voters do that. And when we did some research, people said we just want someone who we can get hold of, someone who can help us in our community. And we don't care where they come from, as long as they get that done. And I think that that's what we're going to see more and more of in these municipal elections. And so, you know, so I could see some big surprises. I think so. I think that voters are not thinking in groups anymore. I think that voters are not thinking.
In class, I think that voters are going to look at what is the best outcome for their street because that's actually what this is about. This is not about national policy or foreign policy or anything like that. This is on a raw street-by-street basis. And I get the sense, and I can see from the data that that's what people are looking at anyway. They may not like Dean McPherson, and that's okay. As Helen says, you may not have to like me, you just have to vote for me.
