Friday's talk radio was dominated by fallout from the Madlanga Commission — a JMPD deputy chief's arrest over the Ikylani precious stones heist, and forensic testimony on a missing 540kg cocaine haul ran across every major station. Treasury's withholding of R13.5 billion from 69 municipalities and the public protector's spaza shop food safety findings gave stations a hard governance thread, while a mine tragedy near Florida and a Mandela Day of remembrance for footballer Jaden Adams added weight to the day.

JMPD deputy chief arrested as Madlanga Commission fallout widens

Stations across Power FM, 702 and Cape Talk led their afternoon and evening bulletins with the arrest of Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi, the alleged mastermind of the 2023 R14.9 million precious stones heist in Kyalami exposed at the Madlanga Commission. IPID executed the warrant in Bedfordview on Friday night after earlier arresting a JMPD officer known as Witness K in Germiston. Separately, Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and NDPP Shamila Batohi announced an urgent meeting with IDAC amid credibility concerns raised by testimony about head Andrea Johnson, expected to appear next week.

Missing Durban cocaine haul: Hawks officer testifies to Madlanga Commission

Warrant Officer Livingstone Mbangase spent Friday in the Madlanga Commission witness box explaining the June 2021 seizure of 541kg of cocaine at Durban Harbour — narcotics with a street value of R200 million that vanished months later from a Hawks safe. Mbangase denied any knowledge of the break-in and disputed earlier testimony that the consignment weighed 27kg, saying his information suggested 7 to 8kg. SMWX's analysis show, Cape Talk and Power FM all tracked the exchanges with evidence leader Advocate Tembeka Skhakhane, with allegations that police may have colluded with cartels.

Treasury withholds R13.5bn from 69 municipalities

Power FM, 702 and SAfm gave extensive coverage to National Treasury's decision to halve July equitable share allocations to 69 municipalities across all nine provinces, worth around R13.5 billion, in a bid to enforce Municipal Finance Management Act compliance. Parliament's cooperative governance portfolio committee held a high-level oversight meeting with provincial representatives and the finance and Cogta ministers. Treasury told the meeting that 27 municipalities received transfers on Thursday — ten in full totalling R1.7 billion — and said the withholding was a last resort after years of unauthorised, irregular and wasteful expenditure.

Two SANDF soldiers die in illegal mining operation near Florida

702 and Cape Talk broke the story of two SANDF soldiers who fell to their deaths down a vertical shaft at the abandoned CRD mine west of Johannesburg during Operation Prosper, the joint anti-illegal-mining push with police. Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Fred Kekana said one soldier fell while pursuing suspects in a wet, muddy tunnel and a second died trying to rescue him. Kekana insisted the tragedy will not derail the operation and vowed security forces will return to clear zama-zamas from the area, with names to be released once families are notified.

Cape Talk and SAfm carried emotional coverage from a packed Stellenbosch memorial for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jaden Adams, who died at a Scott Street residence at just 25, only weeks after playing for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Family spokesperson Brendine Johnson said mourners were left with more questions than answers, describing widespread shock across the football community. Family, friends, supporters and club representatives gathered to celebrate his short career, with tributes highlighting the void he leaves in South African football.
