Terms of service
Last updated 23 May 2026
These terms govern your use of locl, the AI-augmented search, chat, and clip platform for South African talk radio and podcasts operated at locl.co.za (“the service”, “we”, “us”). By signing in or otherwise using the service, you agree to these terms.
What locl does
locl indexes publicly broadcast English-language South African talk radio and selected podcasts, produces searchable transcripts, and offers grounded chat, daily briefings, reports, and short on-demand clips. We augment the public broadcast record; we do not rebroadcast upstream audio to end users. Clips rendered through the service are short fair-dealing artefacts, watermarked with a station-identification sting.
Eligibility and accounts
- You must be 18 or older to use the service.
- You are responsible for the security of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorised access.
- You may sign up for an account at any time. We may decline or revoke access at our discretion.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Reverse engineer, scrape, or systematically download our transcripts, embeddings, or clips beyond ordinary product use.
- Re-publish full transcripts or stitch generated clips into derivative rebroadcasts. Quoting short excerpts with attribution is fine and is the intended use of the product.
- Use the service to harass, defame, or infringe on the rights of any person, including broadcasters, hosts, or guests whose voices appear in the underlying broadcasts.
- Attempt to bypass authentication, rate limits, or other technical measures.
- Use outputs of the service to train competing models without our written consent.
AI-generated content
Chat replies, daily briefings, and reports are produced by large-language models grounded on transcript excerpts. We design the product to require citations and discourage fabrication, but generated text can be inaccurate or incomplete. Always verify against the cited source before publishing. locl is a research tool, not a substitute for journalistic verification.
Intellectual property
- The locl name, logo, software, designs, and editorial output (briefings, reports) are owned by locl and protected by intellectual property law.
- Underlying radio broadcasts are owned by the respective stations. locl relies on the fair-dealing provisions of the South African Copyright Act for criticism, review, reporting, and research. You must rely on the same when quoting or clipping locl outputs.
- You retain ownership of content you submit (e.g. report suggestions), but grant us a non-exclusive licence to use it for operating and improving the service.
Pricing
A free tier is available. Paid plans (Pro and Team) are billed monthly via Paystack at the prices shown on the pricing page, which include VAT. You may cancel a paid plan at any time; if you do not wish to continue under paid terms, you may delete your account.
Termination
You may delete your account at any time from your settings or by emailing [email protected]. We may suspend or terminate your access for breach of these terms, for unlawful use, or where required by law. On termination, your right to use the service ends; the sections of these terms that should reasonably survive (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, governing law) continue.
Disclaimer of warranties
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including fitness for a particular purpose and merchantability. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that AI-generated content is accurate.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, locl is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages, lost profits, or lost data arising out of or related to your use of the service. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of ZAR 1,000 or the fees you have paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. You agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of South Africa for any dispute arising out of or related to these terms or the service.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. We will post the new version on this page with a revised “last updated” date. Material changes will be communicated by email or a prominent notice in the product. Continued use after the change takes effect constitutes acceptance.
