The Madlanga Commission dominated Tuesday's talk radio agenda, with WhatsApp evidence from the late taxi boss Jothan Msibi's phone drawing wall-to-wall coverage across Power, SAfm, 702 and Cape Talk. The Public Protector's damning NSFAS report ran a close second, colliding with fresh unrest at CPUT, while stations also carved space for the SADC Summit close-out, Springbok build-up and a lively debate on marriage decline.

  1. Madlanga Commission: WhatsApps from a dead taxi boss's phone

Every major talk station led with the Madlanga Commission, where evidence leader Matthew Chaskelson walked through downloaded messages from the late Pretoria taxi boss Jothan Msibi's cellphone. The WhatsApp trail allegedly ties Msibi's Big Five Cartel to attempts to procure European surveillance kit including IMSI catchers and jammers, to former Ekurhuleni city manager Imogen Mashazi and her London trip, to businessman Zeke Kumalo, and to suspended Sergeant Fanning Ngcobo acting as a conduit. Vusimuzi Matlala was ordered to file a supplementary affidavit by Friday after invoking his right against self-incrimination on the SAPS healthcare tender.

  2. Public Protector's damning NSFAS report

Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka's report on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme ricocheted across every station. She found more than 43,000 eligible students were left unfunded despite a R3 billion allocation for 2024-2027 aimed at the missing middle, while the SIU flagged another 40,000 students improperly funded at a cost of R5.1 billion. Gcaleka described NSFAS as functioning in a near-permanent state of crisis and ordered Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela to submit a remedial plan by 1 November. Power FM commentators openly called for the scheme to be shut down and rebuilt from scratch.

  3. CPUT shutdown and student unrest

Cape Peninsula University of Technology shut all campuses and ordered residences evacuated within 24 hours after a fire at the Bellville education building and continued violent disruption. Student leadership rejected the eviction directive, and more than 500 students marched to Parliament to hand a revised memorandum to Higher Education Committee chair Tebogo Letsie. The row centres on a withdrawn 2027 financial recovery plan that proposed a registration fee hike, with Letsie arguing the university should have balanced who can pay while tackling accredited accommodation providers charging above cap.

  4. SADC Summit wraps in Durban with Ramaphosa taking the chair

The 46th SADC Heads of State Summit closed in Durban with President Cyril Ramaphosa assuming the chair and the bloc signing three legal instruments: a SADC univisa, a Regional Development Fund and a protocol on human trafficking. Ramaphosa told delegates citizens would judge the bloc not on resolutions adopted but on implementation and the difference made to daily lives. SAfm and Power FM both carried the closing address in full, with Business Unity SA's Stavros Nicolaou unpacking the summit's focus on regional infrastructure as a rebuilding lever.

  5. Springboks build-up to the All Blacks at Ellis Park

Power Sport led on Rassie Erasmus pushing the Springbok team announcement back to Thursday ahead of Saturday's blockbuster against the All Blacks at Ellis Park. Erasmus framed the delay as a mark of respect rather than gamesmanship, and confirmed at a Johannesburg media briefing that captain Siya Kolisi and experienced prop Ox Nche are the only two players in genuine doubt for selection. The rest of the squad has come through the week's work, setting up a full-strength Bok challenge as the Rugby Championship enters its defining fortnight.
