   Zolani Tete laid to rest as boxing world mourns

   Stations from Power FM to CapeTalk and SAfm carried the special provincial official funeral of two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. The 38-year-old was gunned down outside his home earlier this month, and President Ramaphosa signed off on the Category 2 honour at the Eastern Cape government's request. Premier Oscar Mabuyane spoke of Tete's lasting impact from a very young age, while Boxing SA chairperson Ayanda Kumalu paid tribute to a man who carried the sport. Mourners, family and the boxing fraternity packed the stadium.

   Justice Fikile Mokgoase's state funeral

   The special official funeral of Supreme Court of Appeal Justice Fikile Mokgoase drew wall-to-wall coverage on 702, CapeTalk, Power and SAfm. Chief Justice Mandisa Maya described the 65-year-old, who died on 20 August after a long illness, as a jurist of formidable ability and a hardworking, disciplined servant of the people, saying a baobab had fallen. Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi called her fearless in her pursuit of transformation. Mokgoase served two decades on the bench, including as Deputy Judge President of the Limpopo High Court and on the SCA from 2019.

   Nepal flood catastrophe and the missing South Africans

   Every newsroom led at some point with the Himalayan disaster, where the death toll passed 600 and more than 3,000 people, including six South Africans, remained missing after flash floods swept away homes, shops and entire malls. President Ramaphosa, speaking on the sidelines of a Soweto campaign stop, called it catastrophic and said Pretoria was ready to assist with rescue and recovery. Gift of the Givers founder Imtiaz Sooliman told listeners a second team was on standby and that Nepalese authorities had promised the NGO priority status if an international call goes out.

   Q1 crime stats: murders down, GBV still a crisis

   Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia's first-quarter crime stats release ran across Power, 702, CapeTalk and SAfm. National murders dropped by more than 300, carjackings and cash-in-transit heists fell, and the Western Cape recorded a 6.7% decline for a third straight quarter, with Premier Alan Winde crediting the LEAP deployment for a 17% drop in six precincts. But Gauteng still logged the most murders, KwaZulu-Natal the most rapes, and over 9,000 rape cases were recorded nationally. Cachalia and Amnesty International both warned that gender-based violence continues to demand urgent attention.

   Springboks v All Blacks return leg at a sold-out DHL Stadium

   Rugby's greatest rivalry pulled talk radio's sport focus, with the Boks hosting the All Blacks in Cape Town trailing 1-0 in the four-test series. 702 and CapeTalk noted a sold-out DHL Stadium and drama off the field, as SA Rugby launched legal action against travel agencies it accused of leaving fans ticketless after acting illegally and recklessly for commercial gain. Presenters at an organic market in Oranjezicht described crowds decked in Springbok gear, calling it the last stand, while the Currie Cup earlier saw the Pumas thump the Cheetahs 52-26 in Mbombela.
