   Countdown to the 4 November local government elections

   With under two months to go, stations tracked a flurry of election-related developments. The Electoral Laws Amendment Bill will force unrepresented parties to re-register annually or lapse, and bolster the electoral court. An Ipsos poll showed the DA dominant in the Western Cape but facing turnout headwinds in KZN, North West, Northern Cape and the Free State.    Anele Tembe inquest reopens the AKA tragedy

   The inquest into Anele Tembe's 2021 death from a Pepper Club Hotel balcony got underway in Cape Town, with EWN, Cape Talk and BizNews leading coverage. The investigating officer testified about bloodstains on a champagne bottle, towels, bedding and a wall near the bathroom, and described rapper Kiernan 'AKA' Forbes' demeanour when police arrived. A hotel employee recounted Forbes' panicked security call moments before Tembe fell, saying someone was on the balcony wanting to jump. News24's recently published CCTV footage has raised questions about discrepancies with earlier witness accounts. Forbes himself was murdered in Durban in 2023.

   Springboks light up Soweto in front of 86,000

   The Springboks' victory over the All Blacks at a packed Soweto stadium was the feel-good story of the weekend, replayed across 702, Cape Talk and Power FM. Fans described a festival atmosphere outside the ground, tears during the national anthem and disbelief at how affordable tickets had been made, with one 702 caller saying almost everyone around her was crying. Commentators called it a performance fitting of the world champions and argued the Soweto Test should become the crown jewel of the South African rugby calendar. Power FM listeners also noted the crowd's exemplary behaviour throughout the day.

   Denosa's ultimatum to Gauteng Health

   The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa gave the Gauteng Health Department one month to fix nursing shortages, vacant senior management posts, crumbling infrastructure and shortages of medicines, equipment and supplies, threatening protest action if demands are ignored. On SAfm's Daily Discourse and Power FM, Denosa officials singled out new MEC Steve Magona, saying he is still on probation and has not attended the work-stream meetings meant to resolve the crisis, and criticised the absence of the HOD from those sessions. The union said it would also brief the Gauteng Legislature on the state of provincial healthcare.
