   Ramaphosa's national address on gender-based violence

   Every talk station led with President Ramaphosa's evening address from the Union Buildings, in which he admitted government had not done enough on GBV and set out four directives with 60- and 90-day deadlines. The NPA and police must run a national case recovery operation on unresolved murders, rapes and sexual offences; municipalities must conduct women's safety audits; and Trade, Industry and Competition must submit a coordinated package on alcohol-related violence. 702, SAfm, Cape Talk and Power all carried the speech live, with follow-up debate in Parliament and cabinet acknowledging arrests in several Ekurhuleni cases.

   Shadrack Sibiya bail hearing on rape and grooming charges

   Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court for a bail application on charges of rape, sexual grooming and human trafficking of a 16-year-old girl, the daughter of a close associate. In an extraordinary explanation, Sibiya told the court a sexual video of the minor found on his phone had been sent to him by the girl's father on WhatsApp, which he then forwarded to her. The state cited witness-interference concerns and flight risk; bail was postponed to 1 October, with Sibiya remaining at Kgosi Mampuru.

   Tavern mass shootings and the illegal guns debate

   Weekend tavern shootings in the Western Cape and Gauteng left 27 to 28 people dead and pushed illegal firearms back to the top of the talk-radio agenda. 702 walked listeners through how legal gun ownership works in South Africa — competency tests, R650 fees, R1,350 licence applications — while asking why the legislative framework isn't stemming the flow of illicit weapons. SAfm interviewed Julian Rademeyer on cross-border smuggling, and Cape Talk hosted the SA Gun Owners Association pushing back against the draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill. Police are pursuing eight suspects in the Gauteng attack.

   Joe Sibanyoni and the Madlanga Commission

   Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni returned to the Madlanga Commission for cross-examination on his alleged links to organised crime and a multi-million-rand Mpumalanga tender extortion case for which he already faces criminal charges. Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson probed messages in which associate Bafana Sindane allegedly gave mining businessman Tengani Ntuli 48 hours to explain why operations at the Kwakofuntain quarry shouldn't be stopped, tied to unpaid protection fees. Sibanyoni distanced himself from the threats, insisting his role was only a financial contribution. 702, SAfm and Power all tracked the testimony.

   Proteas chase ODI whitewash of Australia
