Friday's talk radio was dominated by the Shadrack Sibiya bail saga, with every major station carrying the WhatsApp threat recording and the postponement to Wednesday. Beyond that courtroom drama, the dial swung between Home Affairs killing off the green ID book, a shock arrest sweep in Knysna's municipality, and a reflective farewell to musician Bab Simlangeni. Sport talk zeroed in on the 2027 Cricket World Cup draw a year out from kick-off.

  1. Sibiya bail bid stalls as threat voice note plays in court

The suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya dominated bulletins on 702, Cape Talk, SAfm, Power FM and SMWX after a WhatsApp voice note was played in the Randburg Magistrates Court in which he can be heard allegedly threatening a potential witness in his rape and sexual grooming case. Investigating officer Nokanyana Ndlovu testified Sibiya took three teenage girls to a Sandton venue before an alleged rape. Defence advocate Estelle Killian cross-examined on the venue and on jail conditions in solitary at Kgosi Mampuru. The bail hearing was rolled over to Wednesday 7 October.

  2. Green ID book to be scrapped as Schreiber pushes smart ID and digital rollout

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber's announcement that the green barcoded ID book will be decommissioned on 31 March 2027 and no longer recognised from 31 March 2028 ran across 702, Cape Talk and SAfm. Schreiber called the book one of the most fraud-prone documents on the continent and said the 90 remaining offices still issuing it will be shut down. He also flagged a working prototype of a smartphone-based digital ID secured by biometrics, and tied the shift to a new numbered stamp system letting the department trace rogue immigration officers.

  3. Knysna mayor and top officials arrested in security contract kickback probe

Cape Talk, SAfm and 702 tracked the arrests of Knysna's mayor, acting municipal manager and chief financial officer by the Political Killings Task Team over an alleged security services contract kickback scam. The trio appear in court on Monday facing corruption charges. The DA called it a turning point after three years of investigation into corruption and decay in the southern Cape town, while ANC Western Cape spokesperson Sifiso Mtoeni was pressed on the fallout. The arrests land a month before local government elections and a month after a former Knysna mayor was murdered.

  4. Proteas drawn with New Zealand and England as 2027 World Cup countdown begins

Cape Talk and Power FM marked exactly one year to the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, after the ICC unveiled the full schedule at a Cape Town launch. The Proteas have been drawn in Group B with New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and a qualifier, opening against the Black Caps at Newlands on 9 October 2027. Former Protea Vernon Philander told Power FM co-hosting will ignite cricket across Southern Africa, while pundits noted the tournament's awkward overlap with the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

  5. Tributes pour in for Bab Simlangeni as SA mourns a mbaqanga great

702 led its bulletins with the death of legendary South African musician Bab Simlangeni at the age of 83 after a short illness. For more than five decades his distinctive voice carried hits such as Selema and Botsotso, becoming part of the national soundtrack across generations. Power FM's homegrown-sounds hour wove tributes into its playlist alongside remembrances of Mandoza and AKA, while SAfm's arts conversation reflected on the thinning of SA's classical and jazz institutions since the dissolution of the National Symphony Orchestra, underscoring how much weight Langeni's generation carried.
