The fallout from the Constitutional Court's asylum ruling dominated the day on air, as violent protests, arrests and a fresh government legal strategy ran through bulletins on 702, Cape Talk, SAfm, 947, Kaya and Power FM. In Cape Town, a surge of gang shootings in Athlone kept residents and Pagad in the headlines. Stations also marked Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize, Sundowns' MTN8 triumph and the loss of R&B singer Freddie Jackson, while Jacob Zuma's health remained a recurring talking point.

  1. Government returns to court as asylum ruling fuels unrest

Justice Minister Mamoloko Kubayi, who chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, said government will seek a supervisory order on implementing the Constitutional Court's asylum judgment, possibly including a suspension period. The move follows violent anti-illegal immigration protests in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, where vehicles were torched, homes burnt and shops looted. Police arrested 30 people, including alleged ringleaders said to have planned to disrupt the MTN8 final. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber outlined an online system with compulsory biometrics from 10 November, warning it is "not a free-for-all". The story led bulletins across most stations.

  2. Athlone gang shootings prompt Pagad ultimatum

Cape Talk and 702 bulletins tracked a surge of gang violence in Athlone and Belgravia. A man and a 65-year-old woman were shot dead in Fool Street on Saturday night, and a second man was wounded. Police have made no arrests and believe the motive is gang-related. The local Community Policing Forum pointed to a string of recent incidents, including a deadly shooting outside Heatherdale Primary during the morning school drop-off. On Sunday, Pagad marched into the suburb to give suspected drug dealers an ultimatum. On Kaya, DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis accused police of failing to tackle gangsterism.

  3. Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize draws Trump backlash

Power FM and Kaya 959 reflected on human rights lawyer Navi Pillay becoming the first South African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The 85-year-old was honoured for promoting international law, with her career spanning Rwanda genocide cases, a term as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and chairing the UN inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Stations also aired US President Donald Trump's complaint that he should have been considered, including his remark that the decision was "an indelible stain" on Norway. A late-night Power FM guest urged the media to "make noise" about it.

  4. Sundowns end Pirates' MTN8 reign

Mamelodi Sundowns' 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final in Durban was a talking point across 702, 947, Power FM and Cape Talk. The result ended Pirates' run of four straight titles in the competition. Coach Miguel Cardoso urged restraint despite collecting two medals in October: "It's important to keep humble." He pointed to a CAF Champions League qualifier days away. Power FM's breakfast team congratulated the squad, and a Cape Talk presenter recalled a listener who had prayed for a Sundowns victory.

  5. Radio remembers Freddie Jackson and Babsy Mlangeni

Music stations paused to honour departed artists. On 702, a presenter paid tribute to American R&B singer Freddie Jackson, who died on 5 October. He recalled a recent South African performance that disappointed some fans, saying, "this guy, he's battling something," before thanking him for the music. Kaya 959 also bid Jackson farewell on air. Kaya's morning news reported that veteran musician Babsy Mlangeni was to be honoured with a special provincial funeral, adding a local note of mourning to the day's music coverage.
