With the local government elections a week away, stations spent the day on IEC logistics, voter numbers and campaign trail moments. Suliman Carrim's bail ruling ran through news bulletins on almost every station. Cape Town radio was gripped by escalating taxi violence that disrupted matric exams, while the Proteas' series-deciding Test at Newlands kept the sports desks busy.

  1. Suliman Carrim granted bail but stays behind bars

The Pretoria Magistrates' Court granted controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim R100,000 bail. He was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport before a flight to Dubai after repeatedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission. The magistrate found the state's flight-risk concerns insufficient but imposed strict conditions. His passport is retained, and he must present himself to the commission within 48 hours. The story ran on 702, Cape Talk, SAfm, Kaya 959 and 947. Bulletins stressed that Carrim remains in custody pending a separate vehicle theft case in Musina, where he applies for bail on Friday.

  2. Cape Town taxi violence hits commuters and matrics

Cape Talk and 702 tracked a deepening conflict linked to route disputes between taxi associations CATA and Codeta. Two people were wounded in a fresh shooting at the Palm taxi rank in Delft, and the city then closed the Delft interchange. This followed killings in Mfuleni, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha. Matric candidates writing final exams were caught up in the chaos. Some scholar transport operators suspended services, and commuters in some areas boycotted taxis. The Western Cape Cabinet met on the crisis, and MMC Rob Quintas urged both associations to bring their members to order.

  3. IEC declares readiness as record voter roll confirmed

Election coverage dominated bulletins across stations as the Electoral Commission launched its National Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. It confirmed a record 29.2 million registered voters for the 4 November local government elections. More than 190,000 staff have been trained, and special voting takes place on 2 and 3 November. Home Affairs announced extended office hours so voters can collect ID documents. President Ramaphosa campaigned in KwaZulu-Natal, where residents raised the cost of living. Cape Talk heard DA mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis admit polling in Cape Town is uncomfortably close.

  4. Proteas collapse after flying start in Newlands decider

The series-deciding third Test against Australia at Newlands drew sustained coverage on 947, Kaya 959, Cape Talk, SAfm and Power FM. South Africa were 203 for two after a 158-run opening stand, with Ackerman making a career-best 95 and Markram 78. A collapse that included ducks for Bavuma and Rabada left them all out for 329. On day two, Renshaw and Green put on 126 before Marco Jansen claimed his 100th Test wicket. Australia were 204 for four after 60 overs.

  5. Money worries driving the nation's mental health strain

A Mediclinic survey reported by Business Day anchored 702's health and wellness feature. It found that financial stress is the leading contributor to poor mental health across generations in South Africa, cited by between 59% and 66% of respondents. The theme echoed elsewhere on air. Cape Talk hosted a reflective conversation on how rarely South Africans discuss money beyond bills, and its ties to power and status. On Kaya 959, an economist unpacked the latest PayInc index showing real net salaries around 2.6% lower year on year.
