The final weekend of campaigning before Wednesday's local government elections dominated news bulletins on nearly every station, as parties held closing rallies and the IEC prepared for special votes. Sport gave listeners some relief, with the Proteas' Test series win over Australia celebrated across several stations. Gauteng's gender-based violence response and a Western Cape court order halting shack demolitions came up repeatedly in the overnight bulletins.

  1. Parties make final pitch as special votes open

Election coverage ran across Power FM, Cape Talk, 702, SAfm, 947 and SMWX. The ANC closed its campaign at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. Jacob Zuma made his first public appearance since a week-long hospital stay at the MK Party rally in eThekwini. Julius Malema told supporters that coalition governments are here to stay, and Helen Zille urged frustrated voters not to abstain. The IEC said it had approved a record 2.6 million special vote applications for Monday and Tuesday, and Power FM discussed polling that shows no party commanding a majority.

  2. Proteas top Test rankings after beating Australia

Kaya 959, Cape Talk and 702 all celebrated South Africa's 2-1 Test series win over Australia. In the decider, Australia were bowled out for 111 chasing 288, with Simon Harmer taking a career-best six for 16 and Kagiso Rabada three wickets. The result lifts the Proteas to the top of the Test rankings for the first time since January 2016. Marco Jansen was named Player of the Series and now leads both the Test bowling and all-rounder rankings. He called the achievement surreal and said he remembers where he comes from.

  3. Lesufi reports on Gauteng's GBVF intervention

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi briefed the media on the province's response to gender-based violence and femicide, and Power FM, Cape Talk and 702 reported on it throughout the day. The briefing followed the discovery of women's bodies across Ekurhuleni between July and September. Lesufi said 21 of 67 directives are complete, 38 are underway and eight have yet to start, about 33 days into President Ramaphosa's 90-day intervention. Response teams have been deployed to 122 high-risk areas and more than 7,000 liquor outlets inspected. An overnight Cape Talk interview raised concerns that civil society is being shut out of government meetings.

  4. Court halts Gate 7 shack demolitions in Maitland

Cape Talk and 702 carried the story in bulletins through the evening and overnight. The Western Cape High Court granted an urgent interim order stopping demolitions at the Gate 7 informal settlement in Maitland, where City of Cape Town law enforcement had left scores of families without homes. Acting Judge Michelle Adams ruled that the city, its law enforcement unit and the Ndabeni Communal Property Trust must allow six applicants to rebuild their shacks and tents. No one may evict them without a court order. Lawyer Caitlin Turok said the city cannot take the law into its own hands.

  5. Cape Talk's weekend picks for film and theatre

Cape Talk's arts reviewers spent part of the weekend on what is worth leaving the house for. They warmly recommended the film Pressure, starring Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott, as one to see in a cinema, which they noted is a rare outing these days. In a later conversation, the presenters praised small independent theatre, including a production called Superfan staged in a tiny venue seating about 42 people. They described that work as a reflection on life aimed at an older audience.
