The local government election count dominated almost every station: the ANC slid to about 31%, seven of eight metros are heading for coalition government, and parties began positioning for negotiations. Away from the results centres, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla's failed bid to have her terrorism-related charges dropped crossed multiple newsrooms, while a Wall Street tech rout and the Springboks' tour opener against Italy gave listeners something else to talk about.

  1. Election count points to a coalition era

With most votes counted, stations tracked the ANC at around 31%, a drop of about 13 points. The DA leads Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni but has no outright majority in any of them. Cape Town is the only metro projected to keep a single-party majority, and MK leads KwaZulu-Natal and eThekwini. ActionSA's Michael Beaumont said the party will negotiate with anyone, and callers debated their preferred coalitions. An HSRC survey found most voters think the poll was free and fair, though trust in the IEC has slipped to 81%.

  2. Zuma-Sambudla loses bid to have charges withdrawn

Cape Talk, 947, SAfm, Power FM and 702 all reported that the Durban High Court dismissed Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla's application to have her charges withdrawn. She faces charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence over her posts on X during the July 2021 unrest. She had argued that the state's evidence was weak. The court found the state had placed evidence before it, but stressed this was not a judgment on the charges themselves. MK Party president Jacob Zuma attended to support his daughter, and the matter stood down while further dates were set.

  3. Tech rout follows US midterm results

Business bulletins on SAfm, Cape Talk and 702 tracked a sharp sell-off after the US midterms. The Dow fell more than 1,800 points and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 5.5%, putting it into correction territory and wiping out the previous day's post-election rally. Cape Talk explained that markets expect a Democratic win to bring tighter regulation of artificial intelligence and less investment in it. Asian tech stocks followed Wall Street lower. A BBC report on SAfm said a trillion dollars had been wiped off seven of the world's biggest tech companies.

  4. Springboks open end-of-year tour against Italy

Sport bulletins previewed the Springboks' opening end-of-year tour Test against Italy. Siya Kolisi captains the side and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu returns at flyhalf. Defence coach Jerry Flannery said it would be disrespectful to go in targeting bonus points, noting that Italy have run South Africa close before. On SAfm, Rassie Erasmus warned his world champions to expect a fiery battle. Power FM pointed out that the Boks sit top of the world rankings on 93.09 points, just ahead of New Zealand, so every game matters.

  5. Cape Talk turns to literacy and dyslexia

Cape Talk's overnight programming took up South Africa's reading challenges. One guest described a global decline in literacy among both children and adults, set against growing reliance on AI and screens, and called it a crisis of literacy. A researcher then discussed her study of how teachers support learners with dyslexia in mainstream classrooms. She found that teachers want to help but often have no training. She argued that district-based support teams must be strengthened to provide that training.
