Cape Talk, Tuesday night

And this was the De Winton's golden mole. I don't know if you know what a golden mole is. It's a small subterranean mammal that lives underground. And we have 17 species in South Africa, 21 species in Africa. And one of these species was known from the west coast, from Port Nullis on the west coast of South Africa, but hadn't been seen since 1946 or 47. No, 1937, I think.

And so we set out to see if we can find the species, if it's still there. And we had nothing much to go on, but we used a sea detection dog that was trained to snuff out golden moles. And we went to the historical site and we actually found golden mole trails there, evidence that there are golden moles there. And I collected some soil from their burrows and we sequenced that. And we actually were able to match that to DeWinton's golden mole.

We rediscovered the species, and that was a really exciting find at the time. But in all of these species-focused projects that I've worked on, I've always been amazed at how many other things we pick up. And that just excites me so much because I see, wow, there's so much more that we can do with this. Now, can you, for example, I remember going into it, it was like the hall of death in Kimberley. I went through, I think it was the Kimberley.
