702, Sunday night

To replay. On to this now. So, how do we secure our borders? Often the conversation is around drugs, weapons, contraband, and even people. But what about stolen vehicles? I remember my first vehicle, my first car KG, it was the little Mazda 323. It was stolen. And it was stolen in a random Friday afternoon. And about two years later, I was called by police.

Who said the car had been found somewhere in Mozambique? And the truth is, many vehicles move across borders using cloned number plates, fraudulent documents, and it makes it all the more difficult to trace them. But the Border Management Authority says it's got a new system, its new vehicle targeting system, is helping tackle exactly this problem. We are joined now by the Border Management Authority Commissioner, Dr. Mike Masiapato. A pleasure as always to have.

You on our show. Thank you for your time. Thank you very much, Bongani. We appreciate this opportunity as the DMA. It was a long time ago when my first little car was stolen and dragged across the border to Mozambique. How would your system have picked it up? Yeah, no, you had actually assisted to describe and make a very clear problem statement. So, how are we going to pick it up? Number one, immediately after your car.

Approaches the port. Our new vehicle targeting system, through the camera installed, was definitely going to read the number plate. And in many instances, in your case, I suppose, you will find that they would have removed your actual number plate and they would have put in a different one. And that is basically in the category of cloned vehicles through which they would put a number plate of the same kind of a make of your vehicle, but also the color and things like that. But the number

Plate will be different. So, in that instance, what happens with the system? It is definitely going to read that number plate, go into the back end, and go and find that that number plate is either fake or it doesn't exist, or actually it belongs to another vehicle. And then it is going to identify it or to target it and actually send an alert to the border guards to say this one requires fiscal inspection. They were going to put it aside and they were going to engage the driver. So, they engage the driver to get the documentation about the
