702, Tuesday morning

Bongani, and to your listeners, thank you for having me again. So, when you heard the Premier, as I no doubt assume you would have, saying it's El Nino, we were caught of God, we didn't know this was going to happen. Oh my goodness, what were your thoughts? I thought he's living in another city, and what he's talking about is not about Gauteng or Johannesburg at all. Because it's been three years, maybe five years, that we as civil society have been warning.

Government to take measures around this time of the year. And we did it again earlier this year. We said, we said we're going into a super El Nino. We know that the minute it gets hot, the demand increases and our systems are too fragile and they cannot be stable. So when he said that, I was like, how is that possible? Because even at Jovag water level, they monitor inflows, outflows. They know what is going on. So

They would have expected this as well. So I just found that very disingenuous, actually. The Joburg Mayor Dada Morero told a colleague of mine there was no water crisis in Johannesburg. What was your reaction to that? Oh, I was like, okay, how long have we? The one thing we have to admit is we have a water crisis. And the water crisis is not about zero water in your taps because there's no water in the dams. It's zero water in your taps.

Because your infrastructure is not working. It's an infrastructural issue at a day zero. So he's kind of defining a day zero according to weather patterns and drought, which I think is very, very limiting in terms of what we're going through in the city. We used to boast about having some of the cleanest water around the world. I mean, the boast was you couldn't quite open a tap in London and drink, but you could do so in Johannesburg. Is there any more? Is there anything?
