Cape Talk, Saturday night

Courts, the forensic service is clogged, and if you're doing blood alcohol, it might take some time to get those results and then get a court date. You did mention that you were starting to work with prosecutors, which suggests that this is an issue of which you are aware. You know, where I'm learning from is my previous portfolio where we worked on wildlife crime.

In that portfolio, what we learned is that if you wanted stiff sentences for rhino poachers, you had to explain to prosecutors and magistrates why this was a serious crime that affects the economy and tourism and so on and so forth. And obviously, there as well, there's an incredible amount of forensic work that has to be done at the site where the rhino is killed in order that you can link the

The person responsible with the crime scene. So, this is work that I've seen in action in the previous portfolio. I mean, you know, we've gone from a situation where runner poachers were getting a fine to a situation where they're getting 20-30 years. So, I think that I've learned from that. It's work that we are going to be instituting. And, of course, you have to look at the whole value chain.

Of arrest, prosecution, and conviction, which clearly does relate also to the way in which blood samples are taken and how they are stored and utilized once the case comes to court. And then the other question is one that I'm not sure that there is a technical answer to, but you might have a thought. Somebody obviously has a friend or an acquaintance or a colleague, it's not spelled out, who regularly drinks.

And drives, and wants to know whether there is a reporting mechanism for a case like that. That's a very interesting question, and I would say probably at the moment there isn't. But you know, something that I think is also an interesting social case. If you remember when it was declared that smoking couldn't happen in public, everybody said, Oh, you'll never enforce it.

I mean, the truth of the matter is that nobody lights up in restaurants, in theatres, or in any other public place anymore. We just don't do it because we know it's not socially acceptable. And we've all policed ourselves. Yeah, we've all turned to vapes because unfortunately, I see a lot of people vaping in restaurants. They try to hide it. It's clear that what they do. Yes, yes. And I mean, obviously, we now need to amend the legislation.
