702, Friday afternoon

Big weekend of sport. It's a busy Friday. Welcome to the Midday Report with me, Jane Dutton. Get in touch with us on 072-702-1702 or 072-567-1567. Working this talk together. Every hour. Every day. This is 702. Let's walk the talk. Two high-profile arrests in a case involving an alleged leak of confidential police information. That's of former.

Corruption boss Andrea Johnson and dismissed crime intelligence deputy Feroz Khan. They've been arrested for allegedly defeating the ends of justice. Karinda Jagmahan, EWN reporter is on this story. What happened? Good morning, Jane. We understand that the police have secured warrants of arrest for both the former officials yesterday, last night, actually, and they were arrested at their respective premises this morning. Now, both are

On the way to court, I believe Johnson is almost here as well, and they'll appear in the dock this afternoon. Essentially, this matter, Jane, goes back to 2018 and involves an investigation into Ferozpan when he was at the helm of the crime intelligence unit as the deputy head. At that time, he allegedly assaulted a female brigadier under his command. And there were internal investigations into that matter. And we hear or we know from the Madlanga Commission evidence revealed there that at

Andrea Johnson and Feroz Khan were allegedly texting each other at the time, and she had shared some sensitive police information about that matter. It is alleged that she shared the docket information, which had details about the complainant against Feroz Khan, and essentially the two discussed the matter. That's why today Peroz Khan is now accused or charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while together they are accused of defeating the ends of justice.

Our police say that this matter will probably be heard by midday or this afternoon, and it is expected that they will apply for bail today. I was going to ask you about that. What do we expect to play out in the court this afternoon? I mean, it really is quite a stunning development, isn't it? It really is. And you can imagine as well, just here at the court, you know, the officials that I hear, we've got senior officials from the NPA, senior officials from the SAPS as well. There's lots of movement at the Pretoria Court, and right now, media.

Also, applying to be able to phone the suspects when they appear in the dock. This is one of those high-profile cases stemming from essentially the Madlanga Commission and evidence being left there. And we hear from police that there could be further arrests in this case as well with regards to whoever else was involved in this apparent defeating of the ends of justice, because that was something that was highly spoken about at the commission regarding the alleged relation between Johnson and Khan and how they benefited from essentially sharing.

This information. And do we know anything about Faraz Khan and how he is? Not yet. Jane, you know, we'll see what happens when he appears in the dock, essentially. He has been under scrutiny for a while because of his absence from the Madlanga Commission, too, where he was supposed to answer questions about an array of issues because crime intelligence itself has been at the center of many allegations of criminal infiltration in the justice system.
