It doesn't matter how you categorize that or define it, they're just very intelligent. How do you feel toward them? Is kind of the question for our next interview here, because according to some very rigorous data from the United States and from China, done several.

I'm Nythia Travela, an associate professor at the University College of London's School of Management, and I recently conducted some research on how intelligence is perceived through the lens of gender by colleagues at work. And Nythia, how is it perceived by colleagues at work based on gender?

So, you know, we think of intelligence as this universally valued attribute, right? And unfortunately, our research actually suggests that intelligent women are perceived as more hostile and less warm by their colleagues and peers compared to intelligent men. And these perceptions actually then spill over to how they're treated at work. That is, how much support they receive from others, how much help they receive, as well as whether they're

Treated well. Unfortunately, our research suggests that they're actually mistreated at work by their colleagues. So let's start with the male colleagues in this scenario, because in my view, that's almost more intuitive and logical to understand. If there are male colleagues who score high on these intelligence tests and they go through a workplace scenario, they are treated, they perceive their treatment, their own treatment as positive. Other people treat them well. And the other people perceive them.

Perceive that male colleague who's intelligent as a good working or a good person to work with? Yeah, essentially, right? So if you are an intelligent male in these workplace contexts, you don't really see any negative evaluations of the self. You aren't perceived as any more hostile than the average person. You're also not perceived as less warm. In fact, in our second study, we actually found that there was a bit of a bonus.

So intelligent men were perceived as less hostile. And that then translated into receiving more help and being victimized less. And what was the case for intelligent women in the workplace in your study? Unfortunately, a completely different scenario in that case.
