Cape Talk, Tuesday night

Packed with treats. Congratulations to you, Elias, from Foslours. You are a first winner. Remember, you need to look out for four other opportunities for you to win the prize. Join the conversation. You with Cape Talk. David, you want to pick up on something that I had a conversation with Errol about? Would it be around technical subjects being introduced in high schools? You calling from Parkwood. Good morning. Good morning, Africa. Yes, sir and no.

Don't you think that the problem is the way we're positioning these technical qualifications? Because it's all about that, why can't you do technical qualifications? Like, in other words, I have failed to become a lawyer, and then like those should be an option. Yes, yes.

So, like, I want to be corrected, Africa. I think that this is the challenge we are confronted with with the SAPS. Like, nobody grew up to become the one wishing to become a police officer. And then it becomes something which is available. Saying, oh, sorry, David, a driver's license and a metric. Why can't you become a police officer? While my dream was to become a business strategist or a lawyer.

An accountant. And then, like, that mentality will be always with me: that I didn't want to do this job. I've joined these people because it was something which was available. I don't know what's going on. Well, I take nothing away from that, David. I happen to know of a number of policemen and women who actually wanted to be policemen and women because their calling was to keep their community safe. So, and I can't tell you what percentage of the police force is responding to a call.

Versus a percentage of the police force that is doing exactly what you're doing, which I can't get into anything else. So, therefore, this is the one option that I have. But I think central to your message: we as parents, we as communities need to start promoting technical subjects as a choice more so than a, well, you're not good at anything else, so therefore, you must do that. And I always say this: I don't know a single plumber who's unemployed, I do not know a single carpenter.

Who's unemployed? I do not know a single mechanic who's not employed. And those are skills that this economy needs to certainly grow the economy. David, thank you very much. David calling us there from Parkwood. We're going to take the second call to come in to 011-88307.
