Cape Talk, Sunday morning

Tour, I think, for the royals. There are bound to be protests and many, well, I've read one or two headlines saying, is this make or break for the reign of King Charles II? Well, I don't know it's quite that, but I do think it could be a very uncomfortable few days in what is normally a very, very warm and welcome visit. All right. A National AI Biosecurity Lab is going to be established. Why? What's this for? Well, it

Is really trying to help the UK respond to the evolving cyber threats, biological warfare threats, and AI-enabled threats. Now, if you think, well, hang on a minute. Oh, no, we are being told now, and I don't, you know, I think it's because it's become so well known that they've had to put out a formal statement that they believe that Russia, North Korea, Iran, and potentially even China is looking at basically.

Threats to the UK. And in the case of Russia and Iran carrying out attacks on the UK. And it's quite clear, SJ, you know, you don't need to send troops or bombs into a country like the UK or South Africa anymore. All you need to do is completely disabled the internet and the computer systems and the data banks. Because, of course, if all of a sudden all your computers go down, you can't pay for any.

Think at the supermarket. Lots of our supermarkets are now cashless. All the deliveries rely on computers, so they'll all be up the spout as well. Many of the government services all rely on computers, so they won't be possible. Of course, the petrol pumps would potentially stop working as well because they're fired up with all sorts of links to computers and, of course, electricity. And so, this sudden dawning on the UK: how well are we protected from this? How well has this government, a previous government,

Protected. So that's why they are looking at this biosecurity lab. Of course, Russia at the moment is said to have a leak of a plague that it's been developing. Russia denies this, but they have isolated a number of workers, it's said, at a laboratory that is thought to be about biosecurity or at least developing bio threats. And it's all rather scary, SJ. So this is what the government's announcing: a major new global institution.

Institution bringing world-leading science expertise together that can safeguard citizens and goals as AI develops. And of course, let's not forget this week there was all that story about potential problems with the many computer programs, particularly one, which we all use day in and day out, and that is open to cyber attack. Meanwhile, this is quite a story on this. Britons are being warned to get
