Now, the former Defense Minister Ronnie Kasrils, who at 87 years old is evidently struggling to remember some of the details of what happened. At least that's what he's saying. Indeed, Mandy, he did say that he was struggling to remember some of the decisions that he may have made because, you know, this was almost 20 years ago that he was in office. He got the summons to appear here. He tried to get the diary from his office then, and nobody has a diary. They can trace it. But in line with what we've heard from the other former colleagues who've testified before the commission this week, he's also denied being part of any meetings between the ANC and apartheid generals to shield anybody from prosecution. In fact, he calls that allegation.

And ironic. He says that given the fact that he himself was a part of the Bisho massacre, he was involved in that protest where people were killed, and he went on to encourage the apartheid soldiers, officials, then to go to the TRC and to confess to what they had done. And he says, given that role, you know, his involvement also in trying to help with the Timol inquiry, inquest, you know.

This shows that he's very invested in the truth coming out about what happened during apartheid. He's denied that he was involved with the wife, the widow of Mr. van der Merva, a farmer, we understand. Mendy, we've had evidence from the commission in the past months where a witness came, Jakob von der Merva, alleging that Mr. Castro apparently approached his mother and coerced.

Or threaten her to forget about this thing because she was pursuing the murder or the perpetrators of her husband's murder. It's alleged that Mr. Vandermer was kidnapped by MK operatives. He was a farmer and he was allegedly killed. His body till today has not been found. The alleged perpetrators did not go to the TRC. The widow, the family till today, don't know what has happened to their loved one.

And he says there was an allegation by Mr. Van der Merve that Mr. Castro, in his role then as the intelligence minister, had actually approached the widow through a lawyer and threatened some sort of action against this widow to not pursue this issue. She also is also denied, you know, the AfriForum issue about the landmines that had killed the Fan Egg family. And he says that he was not part of the AUC 37 that went to approach.
