Banking surged 47% on SA radio, 19–25 Oct

Banking was the clear mover on South African radio this week. Across six stations and 508 qualifying ad chunks, bank spots climbed 47% on the prior seven days to 15% of all airtime tracked. Insurance remained the largest named category at 21%, but it lost ground. Banks gained 24 spots while insurers dropped 22. Political advertising more than tripled from a small base as local government election messaging arrived. Retail also tripled on the back of price-cut and multi-buy promotions.

The ads also landed next to some striking news. A pharmacy chain and a tech firm ran beside coverage of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola's return to duty. A bank spot followed talk of fuel-price relief and a threatened national shutdown. A car-buying service aired straight after a traffic bulletin full of N3 and N1 backups. Auto, health and betting advertisers all pulled back.

Banking was the week's big mover on South African radio. Across six stations and 508 qualifying ad chunks between 19 and 25 October, bank spots rose 47% on the prior week, from 51 to 75. That lifted the category to 15% of everything tracked. The pitch was about growing money rather than moving it. Nedbank pushed an Optimum Plus account earning “up to 10.4% interest”, with a Nedbank Golf Challenge experience attached1. Absa ran a personal, life-moments narrative that put investing for a rainy day alongside buying a home2. Savings and investment messaging in late October looks like early positioning for year-end and bonus season.

Insurance remained the biggest named category at 21% share (106 ad chunks), down 17% from 128 the week before. OUTsurance's testimonial-style, low-premium spots kept the category highly audible3. The gap between the two money categories is narrowing, though. Banks added 24 spots week-on-week while insurers shed 22. If that continues, the financial-services lead on SA radio will shift from protecting your money to growing it.

The steepest climb came from Political parties & IEC, up 260% from 5 to 18. Every one of those spots was attributed to the DA. The ad featured a voter tired of changing mayors who declares, “in this election, I'm voting Democratic Alliance”4. The base is small, but the direction is unmistakable with local government elections on the agenda.

Retail tripled, up 200% from 8 to 24. Clicks ran Clicks Club card price-cut spots5 and Checkers ran grocery multi-buy deals6. That is a classic promotional cycle building toward month-end and the festive run-up. Two categories appeared from nothing, Tech & software and FMCG & grocery, but at three chunks each they are too thin to read much into.

On the other side of the ledger, Auto & motoring fell 39% (51 to 31) and Health & medical aid dropped 45% (20 to 11). Betting & lottery eased 25% and Telecoms slipped 12%. Energy & utilities fell 57%, though from only seven spots. Auto's retreat is the one to note. A drop of that size often means a dealer or model-launch push in the prior week has run its course.

The week's clearest news magnet was the return of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. On Cape Talk, a Clicks price-cut spot aired about a minute before a breakfast interview with a security and law-enforcement expert on the commissioner's return to duty57. On 702, BCX, one of this week's new tech advertisers, ran about half a minute after an EWN bulletin. That bulletin led with Masemola meeting provincial commissioners as he went back to office8. Neither brand has anything to do with policing. That's the point: hard-news breakfast slots are where the inventory is, and commercial brands are buying straight into them.

Money ads also kept landing next to money talk. On 702, an FNB spot followed by about 30 seconds a discussion of fuel prices. The speaker argued that a national shutdown wouldn't help and that Treasury relief talks with Cosatu were the better route9. On 947, FNB's switch-your-investments spot came a minute after a Suzuki R20,000 pop-quiz contestant explained he'd spend any winnings on a December break1011. On SAFM, a Momentum ad followed an International Matters item on an Italian hospital probe. The probe concerns patients who allegedly received costly operations without meeting the requirements12.

Commuter radio delivered its own neat pairings. On Power FM, WeBuyCars' sell-your-car pitch aired roughly 30 seconds after a traffic report of backups on the N3 through Bedfordview and the N1 north1314. On 702, a Department of Transport road-safety message followed a conversation about politicians using church pulpits to campaign15. That put the state's safety appeal in the same break as election talk.

Watch for political spend to keep climbing as the local government elections approach, and for more of it to sit beside campaign-trail editorial. Also watch whether banking's investment push keeps eating into insurance's share of the money conversation heading into November.

“A national shutdown is going to be helping matters in any way whatsoever. I would rather the conversation that Lester Kivitt is going to have with Matthew Parks from Cosatu, where they're exploring ways of how we can have relief that has been offered by Treasury in order for us to pay a little bit less than what we should be for the price of a liter of fuel. I would rather that way is how we proceed as opposed to a national shutdown.”

It's a minute before 10. To all pedestrians, please wear light or white clothing when walking at night. Headlights cannot pick up dark clothing soon enough to save a life.
