Election-day coverage was dominated by the DA's early Cape Town victory claim, a spate of hung councils, and listener debate over voting-queue etiquette and special votes.
- 13:03
The DA declared an early victory in Cape Town, with Geordin Hill-Lewis projecting 58% of the metro vote from party data, though only about 25% of votes were counted and the IEC has not declared.
- 13:05
The ANC lost its outright majority in Makana, Eastern Cape: 10 of 25 council seats, with the DA on six and newcomer MUCM on four, setting up coalition negotiations.
- 13:13
Councils have 14 days after results are gazetted to finalise coalition agreements, with gazetting due within seven days of voting; a proposed 30-day bill is not yet in play.
- 13:14
The IEC has received about 800 complaints, mostly from party agents over access to observing the count; objections close at 5pm Friday before results can be formally declared.
