SAFM celebrated 90 years on air, repeatedly framing itself as the station that has carried South African public conversation through changing governments, technology and generations.

The station’s origins were traced to 1936 as the SABC’s first service, later becoming Radio South Africa and then SAFM in 1995, with its identity tied to news, talk and democracy.

Speakers from civil society, government and professional bodies praised SAFM for informing, educating and connecting the country, including the Health Minister calling it a source of quality, impartial news.

SAFM reminded listeners it operates under the Broadcasting Complaints Commission code, promising accurate news, fair comment and content free of hate speech, violence or explicit sex.
