Police confirmed the ninth woman’s body found in Ekurhuleni since July; her throat appeared slit, and investigators appealed for information while warning against sharing old crime-scene images.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said police are using CCTV, cyber-company information and other resources, but urged the public to wait for evidence before expecting arrests.

Correctional Services commissioner Mahoti Tobakale told the Madlanga Commission that facilities hold nearly 170,000 inmates against approved capacity of about 107,000, representing 63% overcrowding.

Tobakale said officials were implicated in smuggling contraband during lockdown, when visitors and inmate court movements were restricted but staff continued moving in and out.

A level 6 warning was issued for disruptive rain along KwaZulu-Natal’s coast, with localised flooding expected overnight into Friday, particularly in low-lying areas and informal settlements.
