Kurt Elling’s live version of “Nancy with the Laughing Face” from Dedicated to You was framed as a standout 2009 recording, with Lawrence Hobgood’s piano, strings and Ernie Watts adding to the tribute feel.

Elling’s “Freddie Freeloader”/“Freddie Zien” interpretation was highlighted as a rare feat: original lyrics set to Freddie Hubbard’s improvised framework from Red Clay, showing his strength as a vocal arranger.

Diana Krall’s version of “Broadway” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” drew the strongest praise, with the show calling out her piano work, Ray Brown’s bass solos and the intimate trio sound of All for You.
