Wednesday's talk radio was dominated by the Ekurhuleni corruption arrests spilling out of the Madlanga Commission, with President Ramaphosa simultaneously extending the inquiry's deadline to mid-November. Treasury's freeze on funds to 69 municipalities and a fresh eruption of US–Iran hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz ran a close second, while Cape Town's mass shootings and the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals rounded out the day.

Ekurhuleni arrests and Madlanga Commission extended to November
Every major station led on the overnight arrest of four Ekurhuleni figures, including suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi, head of legal services Kemi Bihari, former city manager Imojan Masazi and HR head Linda Kashiega, all linked to allegations of shielding Mkhwanazi over the blue-light saga involving Katiso Matlala. By afternoon, magistrate Trevor Klaassen granted Mkhwanazi and Bihari R50,000 bail each while Masazi and Kashiega remained in custody. In parallel, President Ramaphosa extended the Madlanga Commission's evidence deadline to 2 October and its final report to 16 November, which 702, Cape Talk, Power FM and SAfm all framed as tightly connected to the arrests.

Treasury withholds R13.5bn from 69 municipalities
National Treasury's decision to suspend July equitable share transfers to 69 municipalities over financial mismanagement drew sharp reaction across the dial. SAfm heard Treasury DDG Ogalaleditse Ngharick explain that municipalities had to submit signed payment plans with creditors, while Power FM aired the Activists and Citizens Forum welcoming the freeze as long overdue. On 702, callers warned of devastating knock-on effects, particularly in the North West, and the EFF and MK Party rejected the move, arguing it punishes poor residents rather than corrupt officials. Cogta pushed back that it is working with the worst-affected municipalities on remedial plans.

US strikes Iran again as Strait of Hormuz tensions spike
Cape Talk, 702, Power FM and SAfm all led international coverage on a second wave of US airstrikes on Iranian military sites after attacks on three commercial tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump declared the 14-point interim deal effectively over, calling Iranian leaders 'scum'. Analysts on 702 argued Iran has finally weaponised the Strait after 47 years of restraint, choking global oil supply. The IMF cut its 2026 global growth forecast to 3% citing the conflict, while Brent pulled back off recent highs on hopes of de-escalation and South Africa's growth outlook was trimmed to 1.1%.

Cape Town mass shootings and questions over army deployment
Cape Talk and 702 led local bulletins on two mass shootings in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain and Philippi East that killed at least seven and wounded five. In the first incident, gunmen opened fire on five men outside a tuck shop, killing three. Policing resources have since been beefed up in both areas. On SAfm, a crime-fighting group questioned the effectiveness of the army's deployment on the Cape Flats given eight gun-related fatalities in under 24 hours, tying the story into a wider Gun Free SA briefing that warned civilian owners are the biggest source of illegal firearms.
