Friday's talk radio was dominated by the Madlanga Commission's deepening probe into IDAC head Andrea Johnson and the fallout from the Furoz Khan investigation, alongside a fast-moving international manhunt that ended in a Johannesburg restaurant. Anti-immigration marches flared across several provinces, while stations also made room for Bafana coach speculation, Bastille weekend in Franschhoek and a Wimbledon women's final.

Madlanga Commission zeroes in on IDAC boss Andrea Johnson

Every major talk station led with the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which heard four witnesses — including a protected whistleblower known as Witness O — testify that IDAC head advocate Andrea Johnson allegedly interfered in a criminal complaint against tainted crime intelligence officer Furoz Khan. Witness O said Johnson asked her to delete an email containing docket files, while a retired Hawks colonel described how the assault and intimidation case laid by Brigadier Leonora Peitle was closed after Johnson's involvement. NPA head Advocate Mzinyathi Batohi's successor Ndimeni Mtibi confirmed he would engage the acting police minister to resolve the growing IDAC–SAPS standoff.

UK triple-murder suspect arrested in Kensington

Breaking through Friday evening bulletins on 702, Cape Talk and SAfm, police confirmed the arrest of Ndlota Nam Kanyi Sichuma — also known as Mark Chuma — in a Johannesburg restaurant just five days after he arrived in the country. Wanted by Bedfordshire Police for the alleged murder of his wife and two daughters at their UK home, he was traced within hours of Interpol issuing a red notice on Thursday, following a tip-off believed to have come from a family member. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said South Africa was not a hideout for fugitives; extradition proceedings begin Monday.

    Anti-immigration marches sweep several provinces

The Midday Report and Power FM tracked simultaneous protests against undocumented foreigners in Hillbrow, Marianridge outside Durban, Soweto's Jabulani and Beit Bridge, with at least eight foreign-owned spaza shops looted in KZN and rocks exchanged between marchers and flat residents on the way to Hillbrow. Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke was brought in to put numbers to the rhetoric, noting international migrants make up about 4% of the population. SAfm callers warned of a worrying spillover — business owners reported mobs demanding they stop employing South Africans from Limpopo and North West, which presenters flagged as illegal internal xenophobia.

Inyobayeni Tavern inquest finds grounds for prosecution

Four years after 21 young people died at the Inyobayeni Tavern in East London, the Gqeberha Regional Court sitting in Dutywa ruled that the cause of death was asphyxiation from crushing, and found prima facie evidence supporting potential criminal prosecution. SAfm carried the magistrate's order that the record be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions under section 17(2) of the Inquests Act. The NPA welcomed the finding, saying the inquest had been initiated precisely because earlier investigations could not establish criminal liability. The matter now rests with the Eastern Cape DPP.

Bastille weekend and Franschhoek's French heritage bash

Cape Talk turned to lifestyle with a preview of the annual Bastille Festival in Franschhoek, celebrating the valley's French heritage with wine, food and family events across the weekend. Saturday's main event has sold out but Sunday tickets are still available at R450 on Webtickets, and the village is running plenty of free attractions — including a French bulldog contest and an Emily-in-Franschhoek lookalike competition. The station paired it with weekend theatre and comedy tips, including Vlooi de Langer's ukulele-driven Edinburgh Fringe show "Why Are You Like This?" at the Pretoria Fire and Ice.
