    A wave of viral videos showing youngsters drenching strangers, elders and delivery workers to "celebrate" spring prompted an unusually consistent conversation across 702, SAfm and Power FM. Advocate Wim Trengove argued the panel led by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo misconceived its mandate, relied on hearsay, a confidential Namibian police report and an unverified audio clip, and that it would have been absurd to expect the president to report the Phala Phala burglary to police in person rather than to protection head Wally Rhoode. The ATM, opposing the application, insisted foreign currency stuffed in a couch was itself enough to warrant impeachment.

  2. Crime Intelligence deputy Faroz Khan dismissed from SAPS

    Talk stations broke into programming to report that suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Faroz Khan had been dismissed from the South African Police Service. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Khan was deemed dismissed under Regulation 9 of the SAPS discipline regulations after failing to appear before the senior officer overseeing an expedited disciplinary process. Khan, still recovering from a shooting two months ago, had his Labour Court bid to halt proceedings dismissed on Monday. He faces a range of criminal allegations and is expected to appear before the Madlanga Commission later this month, with SAPS insisting no member is above the law.

  3. ANC vs IEC over missed candidate deadline

    The row between the ANC and the Electoral Commission ran across bulletins all day. The ANC blamed technical glitches on the IEC's candidate capture system for failing to submit close to 200 ward and PR candidates before Friday's deadline, but IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo told Cape Talk there was no system-wide problem and no other party had reported similar issues, suggesting the ANC left submissions to the last minute. In total 142,072 candidates were nominated to contest 10,526 council seats on 4 November, and the Commission has now begun vetting them for compliance.

  5. Power FM confronts SA's baby-dumping crisis
