The fallout from the Constitutional Court's ANC candidate-list ruling dominated bulletins on almost every station, as the IEC reopened submissions and rushed to reprint ballots. The Matlala web stayed in the headlines from two directions: a businessman was arrested at OR Tambo, and President Ramaphosa reinstated the police commissioner whose charges in that saga were withdrawn. Sports desks opened on a sombre note with the death of a Lions player in France.

  1. IEC scrambles after ConCourt ANC ruling

Stations including Power FM, 702, SAfm, 947, Kaya 959 and Cape Talk tracked the IEC's response to the Constitutional Court ruling that 181 ANC candidates must go on the lists after the party missed the deadline by failing to hit submit. The Commission reopened submissions for 32 other parties in 121 municipalities and must print an extra 6.6 million ballots, bringing the total to 33 million. Its Sunday printing deadline is now gone, but it says the 4 November election date stands. 947 reported that Fikile Mbalula collapsed while reacting to the ruling and is recovering.

  2. Suliman Carrim arrested at OR Tambo

Former ANC North West treasurer Suliman Carrim, 49, was arrested at OR Tambo moments before boarding an international flight to Dubai. He was charged with contravening the Commissions Act after repeatedly failing to return to the Madlanga Commission. Coverage on 947, 702, Kaya 959, SAfm, Power FM and Cape Talk followed his first court appearance. The state said he had massive travel bags, while his lawyers said he was going on a religious pilgrimage. His bail hearing was postponed to Monday, so he spends the weekend at Kgosi Mampuru, where Matlala and Sibiya are also held.

  3. Masemola back as national police commissioner

President Ramaphosa confirmed that National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola will resume duties on Monday. Masemola had been on precautionary suspension since April. Cape Talk explained that criminal charges under the Public Finance Management Act were withdrawn on 22 September. Those charges related to his alleged failure to prevent irregularities in the SAPS tender linked to alleged crime boss Vusimuzi Cat Matlala. Bulletins on 702, 947 and SAfm carried the Presidency's thanks to the acting commissioner. Police committee chair Ian Cameron welcomed the return, while Cape Talk noted Masemola remains under investigation in other, unrelated matters.

  4. Lions lock Hiran Andrews dies in France

Sports desks on 702, 947 and Cape Talk led with the death of Lions lock Hiran Andrews at the team hotel in France on the eve of their Champions Cup opener against La Rochelle. French prosecutors initially announced the death without naming him while his family was informed. 947 noted reports that he had been found in cardiac arrest in a shower cubicle locked from the inside. A later SA Rugby statement said he died following an accident after falling at the hotel. Presenters described a tragic blow to the rugby fraternity ahead of the weekend's fixtures.

  5. UWC lab calls for sperm samples

Cape Talk's overnight programme turned the spotlight on men's health and declining male fertility in South Africa. The host spoke to an associate professor from the University of the Western Cape's Comparative Spermatology Laboratory, which has recently called for sperm samples as part of its research. The presenter admitted he hadn't known the lab existed. The segment was part of a run of personal-interest health conversations on the station that also took in how coffee and other drinks affect teeth.
