The Constitutional Court's ruling restoring 181 ANC candidates to the 4 November ballot swept across every news-carrying station. Fikile Mbalula's emotional reaction, and his call to review the DA's place in the GNU, kept the story running into the evening. Shadrack Sibiya's bail hearing and a fresh wave of campaign-trail shootings kept crime and politics intertwined, while bulletins also tracked the prolonged Joburg inner-city power outage and the discovery of 200 people at an illegal rehab centre in Mpumalanga.

  1. ConCourt puts 181 ANC candidates back on the ballot

The Constitutional Court's ruling in the ANC's favour dominated bulletins on SAfm, Power FM, 702, Cape Talk, 947 and Kaya. The majority judgment set aside the Electoral Court order and instructs the IEC to include 181 ANC councillor candidates on ballots in six municipalities. The party had uploaded its lists but failed to click the 'submit as final' button before the deadline. The IEC, which had already printed a large share of ballots, says it will implement the order. Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula collapsed while addressing media, then called for the DA's role in the GNU to be reviewed.

  2. Sibiya bail hearing ends, judgment due Tuesday

Former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya's three-week bail hearing in the Randburg Magistrates' Court wrapped up, with judgment set for next Tuesday. He faces charges including the rape of an 18-year-old and the sexual grooming of a 16-year-old. The state argued that he had his cellphones wiped before his arrest and that witnesses would be endangered if he were released. His lawyer questioned the basis of the human trafficking charge. A recorded call played in court, in which alleged middleman Kabonga claimed protection at the Madlanga Commission, drew a categorical denial from the commission.

  3. Campaign-trail killings as election violence mounts

Election-season violence ran through bulletins on SAfm, Power FM, 702, Kaya and Cape Talk. On the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, gunmen killed an ANC ward election coordinator and a campaign volunteer during door-to-door campaigning, and two others were left critically injured. Police have opened murder and attempted murder cases, and political motives cannot be ruled out. In Gauteng, the 46-year-old man accused of killing four ANC members as they left a memorial service in Katlehong appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates' Court. His bail application was postponed to next Thursday amid protests outside the court.

  4. Proteas reshuffle to save Australia Test series

Cricket talk on air centred on whether the Proteas can avoid losing their three-Test series against Australia with a game to spare. 702's sports desk noted that the 214-run defeat in Durban was the world champions' first loss in Temba Bavuma's 13 matches as captain. Kaya reported the selection changes. Matthew Breetzke comes in for Tristan Stubbs, who scored 32 and 1 in Durban. Ryan Rickelton is set to take the gloves from Kyle Verreynne, and uncapped Marcus Ackerman looks set to slot into the top order.

  5. The runaway cost of matric dances

702 listeners took up the escalating cost of matric dances. Hosts cited a TikTok video in which someone said they had spent close to R100,000, complete with pre-drinks, a pre-party, cars and an escort convoy to the venue. Callers argued that much of the pressure comes from learners rather than parents, some of whom cannot afford the spend. On Power FM, a caller called for the occasion to be a more relaxed affair without pressure on parents or learners, making it one of the day's livelier social conversations.
