Former deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya's bail hearing dominated the day, with victims' affidavits read in court and replayed on stations from 702 to Kaya, Power FM and podcasts. Cosatu finally settled its leadership fight, a deadly shooting of ANC members in Katlehong raised fears about election-season violence, and the IEC reported on its readiness for the 4 November polls. Rwanda winning Formula One's return to Africa ahead of South Africa gave sport shows plenty to debate.

  1. Sibiya bail hearing hears victims' affidavits

Stations across the dial followed Shadrack Sibiya's bail application in the Randburg Magistrates' Court. The former deputy national police commissioner faces six charges, including rape, sexually grooming a minor and trafficking. Prosecutor Velile Makassana read statements from the 18-year-old complainant and the 16-year-old's father. The teenager said she fears for her life and has struggled with suicidal thoughts. The defence called the charges frivolous and fabricated. SAfm reported the Madlanga Commission will get a statement from Serge Kabonga over recordings played in court, and 702 listeners argued about the case on air.

  2. Mike Shingange elected Cosatu president

Cosatu elected Mike Shingange as president at its reconvened 15th National Congress in Kempton Park. The congress had collapsed in September over credentials and a dispute about whether he was eligible to stand. Shingange is former Nehawu president and was Cosatu's first deputy president. He replaces Zingiswa Losi and called on members to help rebuild a federation that has lost members, saying workers must be proud to belong. The election was covered on 702, SAfm and Power FM. An SAfm caller dismissed the result as a 'labour oligarchy', while Power FM guests saw a top six agreed in advance to avoid another collapse.

  3. Katlehong shooting of ANC members escalated

The Katlehong shooting led bulletins on SAfm, 702, Cape Talk, Kaya, Power FM and 947. Four people died and two children, aged 11 and 14, were wounded when a gunman opened fire on a group returning from a memorial service. The service was for ANC member Jeanette Makugu, who was killed last week. Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo said the case has gone to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team. A suspect handed himself over and is due in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. The ANC Youth League says it will mobilise members to protest outside court.

  4. IEC says it is ready for the 4 November polls

The IEC briefed the media on its readiness for the local government elections, and several stations covered it. More than 66% of 79 million ballot papers have been printed, with printing due to finish by 18 October. All 23,696 voting stations are secured, and special votes will be cast on 2 and 3 November after about 2.6 million applications. Power FM noted that ballots may have to be reprinted if the IEC loses the ANC's Constitutional Court bid to reinstate 181 councillor candidates. The DA's challenge to single-name PR lists continued in the Electoral Court.

  5. Rwanda beats South Africa to Formula One's African return

Stations reacted to news that Rwanda signed a ten-year deal to host Formula One from the early 2030s, beating South Africa's bid. F1 has not raced in Africa since the 1993 South African Grand Prix. Power FM, 947, Kaya and SAfm debated what the loss means, and Kaya asked AI to explain why Rwanda won. On Cape Talk, one host argued South Africa 'dodged a bullet', citing estimated costs of R735 million to R915 million a year. Another questioned handing the race to Paul Kagame's government, and a caller quipped that the country 'can't even afford VAR'.
