With the 4 November local government elections just over two weeks away, campaigning dominated bulletins across nearly every station. The main threads were Cyril Ramaphosa's Khayelitsha visit, a run of political killings and the fallout from the ANC's Constitutional Court win. Former president Thabo Mbeki's imminent appearance before the Khampepe Commission and the relentless climb in fuel prices also ran across stations, while rain frustrated the Proteus in Gqeberha.

  1. Ramaphosa takes ANC campaign to Khayelitsha amid political killings

Stations including Cape Talk, 702, SAfm and Power FM followed Ramaphosa on the trail in Khayelitsha. He promised police would bring to book those behind recent political killings, including two ANC volunteers shot while canvassing in KwaZulu-Natal and four ANC Youth League members gunned down in Ekurhuleni. He said the outcome should not affect the government of national unity. Fikile Mbalula said he was back at work after appearing unwell following the ANC's Constitutional Court win over 181 excluded candidates. In Johannesburg, Helen Zille urged DA voters towards an outright majority.

  2. AfriForum seeks to cross-examine Mbeki at Khampepe Commission

Bulletins on 702, Cape Talk, Kaya 959 and Power FM carried AfriForum's request that its legal team be allowed to cross-examine former president Thabo Mbeki over alleged political interference in apartheid-era murder prosecutions. The cases include a 1985 landmine attack that killed a woman and her two children, aged 8 and 2. AfriForum's CEO said Mbeki acknowledged in an affidavit that ANC leaders took decisions that could result in gross human rights violations. Mbeki, who earlier sought Justice Khampepe's recusal, was expected to begin testifying on Monday morning.

  3. Fuel price squeeze sparks shutdown call and listener anger

Fuel costs ran through phone-ins and analysis across stations. On 702, a guest noted that petrol has gone from R9.90 a litre in 2015 to more than R30 now, with warnings it could reach R40 by year end. Cape Talk flagged a call by a group of concerned citizens for a national shutdown on Monday over prices. Power FM carried Cosatu's warning that petrol had risen more than 25% and diesel over 50% in a year. On SAfm, a caller described paying more than R2,000 to fill a 60-litre tank.

  4. Rain halts Proteus on day one of second Test against Australia

Cricket led sports bulletins on 702, 947 and Power FM as the Proteus sought to bounce back from a 214-run first Test defeat to Australia. At St George's Park in Gqeberha, rain had the final say on day one, with South Africa in early trouble on 20 for two. Aiden Markram made 20 and David Bedingham fell for a duck. Temba Bavuma had spoken of the ground's distinctive atmosphere. Elsewhere, the Bulls and Stormers ran up big Champions Cup wins while the Lions lost at La Rochelle.

  5. Cape Town housing affordability squeezes the middle class

A breakfast conversation heard on Cape Talk and 702 examined why living near work in Cape Town is slipping out of reach. A guest said the city's reported pipeline of more than 14,000 affordable units is at various stages of land release and packaging, not homes people are moving into. Delivery depends on national, provincial and local government working together. Middle-income earners who fall outside affordable housing schemes face unrealistic deposits and bond repayments. Many residents are left facing commutes of more than two hours, with semigration cited as one contributing factor.
