Accountability ran through Monday's bulletins on every station. Thabo Mbeki took the stand at the TRC cases inquiry on the same day General Fannie Masemola walked back into police headquarters, and both stories led newsrooms from SAfm to Kaya 959. Tshwane's contaminated-water outbreak in Bronkhorstspruit and the government's search for fuel-price relief kept pressure on the state, while the Proteas fought through a rain-hit Test in Gqeberha.

  1. Mbeki denies shielding apartheid-era perpetrators

Former President Thabo Mbeki's testimony at the TRC cases inquiry ran across SAfm, Power FM, Cape Talk, 702, 947 and Kaya 959. Mbeki called claims of a secret deal with apartheid generals to shield each other from prosecution a complete fabrication. He also rejected the idea that his April 2003 address authorised political interference in TRC prosecutions. AfriForum sought permission to cross-examine him over the 1985 landmine attack that killed members of the Van Eck family. Lukhanyo Calata accused him of failing families who have waited decades for justice. Mbeki will return later for cross-examination.

  2. Masemola returns to lead SAPS

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola's first day back in office was a fixture of bulletins across stations. He had spent six months on precautionary suspension over charges that he failed to prevent alleged tender fraud linked to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala. Those charges were withdrawn for insufficient evidence. Masemola met provincial commissioners at the Tshwane academy and told media in Pretoria he would focus on rebuilding public trust, frontline policing and procurement. Stations also reported calls for his term, due to end in March, to be extended, and an election threat assessment headed to his desk.

  3. Unchlorinated water behind Bronkhorstspruit outbreak

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina said 408 cases of gastrointestinal illness had been recorded in and around Bronkhorstspruit since early October, peaking at 72 cases on 13 October. Her department found that water from the local treatment works went unchlorinated between 24 September and 14 October because of problems with the City of Tshwane's chlorine supplier. She said the city failed to alert residents. Preliminary tests found E. coli. The DA said it would lay criminal charges against the municipality. Hosts on Power FM and 702 voiced open outrage on air.

  4. Government weighs fuel price relief ahead of mini-budget

President Cyril Ramaphosa said government was giving serious consideration to cushioning South Africans from soaring fuel costs. He noted that an earlier intervention had already redirected about R24 billion from other programmes. On Cape Talk, a guest urged the state to tap a R10 billion allocation to the Central Energy Fund's equalisation fund. A market commentator noted that diesel is up about 82% since before the Middle East war, with Brent near $108 a barrel. Power FM framed the debate around Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday.

  5. Bavuma digs in as Proteas battle Australia

Sport bulletins tracked the Proteas' rain-interrupted second Test against Australia in Gqeberha. South Africa slipped to 20 for 2 on day one after Scott Boland removed Aiden Markram and David Bedingham with consecutive balls. Captain Temba Bavuma anchored the recovery on day two, and SAfm's commentators praised a gutsy innings on a moisture-laden pitch. In football, Relebohile Mofokeng's 75th-minute goal gave Orlando Pirates a 1-0 first-leg CAF Champions League win over African Stars. Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a goalless draw in Angola.
