Contaminated water dominated the day. The Bronkhorstspruit crisis ran through bulletins on almost every station, with fresh scares in Johannesburg and Makhanda and Rand Water warning of supply restrictions. With the 4 November local elections 12 days away, stations also weighed fuel-levy relief that opposition parties called electioneering. Alongside that came a landmark verdict in the Nathaniel Julies case and a deadly escalation in Durban, while sports desks were still celebrating the Proteas' thumping win in Gqeberha.

  1. Bronkhorstspruit water crisis reaches Parliament

The Bronkhorstspruit water contamination crisis was the day's most pervasive story, running through bulletins on 702, Kaya 959, Cape Talk and SAfm. Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya told Parliament the city would cooperate fully with investigations and criminal charges. She confirmed that the treatment plant manager had been suspended after 595 people fell ill from unchlorinated water. The Human Rights Commission and Public Protector both weighed in. Separate scares at Rhodes University and in Bezuidenhout Valley, plus Rand Water's warning of supply restrictions, kept water safety on air all day.

  2. Two former police officers guilty of Nathaniel Julies murder

The High Court sitting in Palm Ridge found two former police officers guilty of murdering 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies. Julies had Down syndrome and was shot near his El Dorado Park home in 2020 after buying biscuits from a tuck shop. Cape Talk's report detailed how he was shot with banned ammunition before the officers tried to cover up the scene. On Kaya 959, the NPA said the convictions underscore accountability for those entrusted with upholding the law. Power FM and 702 also carried the verdict. The pair remain on bail pending sentencing next month.

  3. Five questioned after foreign national beaten to death in Durban

KwaZulu-Natal police took five men aged between 19 and 46 in for questioning after marchers beat a man to death in the Durban CBD. The killing came against the backdrop of anti-illegal immigration protests that have seen foreign-owned shops attacked, looted and torched. 702 and Kaya 959 reported that the men were picked up during a protest outside the Home Affairs offices on Che Guevara Road. Police are investigating a murder, an attempted murder and assaults on foreign nationals in the CBD and Berea.

  4. Proteas crush Australia to level Test series

Stations were still savouring the Proteas' win by an innings and 31 runs over Australia in the second Test at St George's Park, which levelled the series at one-all. Temba Bavuma's 179 earned him player of the match. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder shared 17 wickets to finish the job on a rain-hit final day. Power FM, 702, Cape Talk and SAfm all ran the result. Bavuma warned that the team carries a target on its back ahead of the Newlands decider starting on Tuesday.

  5. Cape Talk discovers the Kalahari truffle

On Cape Talk's evening food slot, the presenter described stumbling on Kalahari truffles at a market stall and invited the grower onto the show. The conversation set South Africa's indigenous desert truffle against its better-known European cousins, famously hunted with pigs and dogs. The presenter noted that many listeners would not know a local variety even exists. The segment closed by celebrating an under-explored indigenous ingredient and wishing the grower well in expanding his business, a gentle counterpoint to a heavy news day.
