Tshwane's Bronkhorstspruit water contamination dominated news bulletins across five stations, with Parliament hearing that most of those who fell ill were small children. The 4 November local government elections drew closer amid concern about AI-driven disinformation. Durban's anti-immigrant violence kept recurring in bulletins, while sports desks absorbed the shock of Mamelodi Sundowns' early continental exit.

  1. Bronkhorstspruit water crisis reaches Parliament

Tshwane's Bronkhorstspruit water contamination led bulletins on Cape Talk, 702, SAfm, Power FM and Kaya 959. Parliament's portfolio committee heard that 595 people have fallen ill. The Department of Health said 44% of cases are children under four. The illnesses followed about three weeks in which the treatment works went without chlorination. Mayor Nasiphi Moya suspended the plant manager and commissioned an independent probe. Deputy Minister David Mahlobo said the department would open a case over non-compliance. The DA's Stephen Moore accused the city of scapegoating the manager.

  2. Durban anti-immigrant violence continues

702, Cape Talk and Power FM tracked the wave of violent anti-immigration protests in Durban, where cars and properties have been torched. KwaZulu-Natal police said five men had been taken in for questioning over the murder of a foreign national and assaults in the CBD. Civic campaign spokesperson Yeshlin Govender said those arrested were not the ringleaders. He said about 30 masked men were carrying out stabbing attacks in the CBD as recently as Friday afternoon. Power FM also carried a commission's warning that mob violence has no place in a constitutional democracy.

  3. Election countdown and AI disinformation

With the 4 November local government elections days away, election coverage ran through bulletins on several stations. On Power FM, William Bird, formerly of Media Monitoring Africa, said the IEC's disinformation code requires parties and candidates to declare any use of AI. Complaints about election content, many linked to posts on X, numbered between 700 and 850 depending on the bulletin. Parliamentary committees expressed confidence in the IEC after an oversight visit. Meanwhile, the DA held its final Ekurhuleni rally and EFF leader Julius Malema criticised the tender system in Mpumalanga.

  4. Sundowns crash out of CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns' early exit from the CAF Champions League led the sports desks on Power FM and Kaya 959. A 1-1 draw against their Angolan opponents saw the Brazilians eliminated on away goals in the second preliminary round. Kaya noted it is the first time in 12 seasons that Sundowns will miss the group stage. Coach Miguel Cardoso argued his side had created enough chances to win comfortably. Orlando Pirates fared better with a 1-0 win in Botswana, while Kaizer Chiefs also failed to win.

  5. Market Theatre stages first queer festival

On 702, Market Theatre artistic director Greg Homan spoke about the theatre's first-ever queer festival. The festival is staged during Pride Month, which South Africa marks in October rather than the June observed elsewhere. Billed around the idea of radical joy, it forms part of the Market's 50th year. Homan framed it as a continuation of the theatre's tradition of socially conscious work, a tradition he described as telling the South African story.
