With the 4 November municipal elections days away, parties' final weekend push dominated bulletins on almost every station. Running alongside it were growing anger over Tshwane's contaminated water, another mass shooting on the Cape Flats, and steady coverage of the DRC's Ebola outbreak. Sport desks had a busy weekend, led by the Bulls' signing of Kwagga Smith.

  1. Parties make final push before municipal elections

Election campaigning ran through bulletins on 702, Cape Talk, Power FM and SAfm. The EFF held rallies in Ekurhuleni and the Sedibeng district, while the DA and MK party mobilised in Durban. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa went door to door in Diepkloof, Soweto, where residents raised frustrations about service delivery. He acknowledged their concerns but insisted the ANC had transformed the township. On BizNews Radio, pollsters said the DA leads in five of six metros but has an outright majority only in Cape Town. Cape Talk listeners debated splitting their votes between parties.

  2. Anger mounts over Tshwane's unchlorinated water

The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis drew sharp criticism across SAfm, 702, Kaya 959 and Power FM. More than 500 residents fell ill after the City of Tshwane failed to adequately chlorinate their water, and tests found high levels of E. coli. Mayor Nasiphi Moya suspended the plant manager and said the city would cooperate with investigations and criminal charges. WaterCAN demanded wider accountability, and a 702 caller called the chlorine shortage gross negligence. Parliament's health committee questioned the planning failures, and the EFF called for Moya's resignation. Separately, the city lifted a boil-water advisory for the Pretoria CBD.

  3. Lavender Hill mass shooting puts Operation Prosper under scrutiny

Cape Talk, 702 and SAfm led with a manhunt for gunmen who killed five people and wounded three at a house in Lavender Hill near Steenberg. Police say the victims, aged 21 to 33, were having a braai when they were ambushed. It is the third deadly mass shooting in Cape Town in recent weeks, with a combined toll of 19 dead. Community members allegedly stoned police vehicles at the scene. Parliament's police committee chair Ian Cameron questioned what Operation Prosper is achieving. Mark Nicholson, whose son Keenan was among the dead, called for drastic justice reform.

  4. Ebola outbreak spreads as DRC begins vaccine trial

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo featured on Cape Talk, Kaya 959, Power FM and SAfm. Cape Talk reported that the first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine has begun in Bunia, in Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak. Cases have now passed 9,700 and deaths exceed 4,600. Kaya 959 reported Kenya's second Ebola death, a 65-year-old relative of the first victim. SAfm noted Uganda has barred non-essential travellers from the DRC. A Power FM guest said deaths are accumulating faster than in the 2014–2016 West African outbreak.

  5. Bulls land Kwagga Smith as weekend sport delivers

Sports bulletins on Cape Talk, Power FM and Kaya 959 confirmed that the Bulls have signed double World Cup-winning Springbok Kwagga Smith on a three-year deal. The loose forward is currently sidelined with an ACL injury. In the United Rugby Championship, the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks stayed in the top eight, while the Lions slipped to tenth. The Springbok women lost their first test against Ireland 40-27. In football, Orlando Pirates beat African Stars 1-0 in Botswana. Kimi Antonelli started on pole in Austin with a chance to become Formula One's youngest champion.
