Cape Town's deadly taxi war between CATA and Codeta dominated the day, running through bulletins on Cape Talk, 702, SAfm and Power FM as a key rank stayed shut under police and army guard. With the 4 November local government elections days away, 702 wrapped up its mayoral debate series in Ekurhuleni. Elsewhere, stations tracked a gripping Newlands Test and the push to make Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi the next Hawks head.

  1. Cape Town taxi violence shuts Delft rank

The route war between taxi associations CATA and Codeta was the most widely covered story on air. Bulletins reported that at least a dozen people have been killed in three weeks of clashes over a route linking Delft, Langa and Epping. The Palms rank in Delft stayed closed under police and army guard after two more people were wounded. Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku is heading to court. The City also had to debunk a fake poster and false claims of an N2 blockade. Late on, Cape Talk reported that services would resume for Friday's commute after talks with Santaco.

  2. Ekurhuleni voters grill mayoral hopefuls as polls near

702 broadcast the last of its town hall mayoral debates from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni. Residents questioned how the city can fight crime when senior officials, including the city manager and a former metro police head, are themselves accused of crimes. Unemployment and the city's finances were also raised, including R2 billion in missing electricity revenue. Other election coverage on SAfm noted a record 2.6 million approved special voters. On 702, the DA said it had won a high court order compelling broadcasters to air its election adverts.

  3. Proteas fight back in Newlands decider

Sports desks on Cape Talk, SAfm, Power FM and Kaya followed the third and final Test against Australia at Newlands, with the series level at one-all. On day two, Simon Harmer removed Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, and Marco Jansen took two wickets. Even so, a 145-run stand between Josh Inglis and Alex Carey left Australia narrowly ahead. Power FM noted that Kagiso Rabada battled stomach cramps and Jansen had back stiffness. On day three, Tony de Zorzi Ackermann and Temba Bavuma steadied South Africa's reply with a solid partnership.

  4. Mkhwanazi tipped to lead the Hawks

Stations including Cape Talk, 702, SAfm and 947 reported that Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has submitted a cabinet memorandum. It seeks approval to appoint KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as national head of the DPCI. The post has had an acting head since Godfrey Lebeya retired in May last year. Bulletins noted that it is 16 months since Mkhwanazi blew the whistle on alleged political interference in SAPS, which led to probes by Parliament and the Madlanga Commission. SAfm hosted analysis on the appointment and invited listeners' views.

  5. South Africa's unregulated cannabis economy

Cape Talk's evening show looked at the cannabis shops springing up across the country, selling gummies and hosting growing clubs. They operate with no legal framework beyond the Constitutional Court's ruling on private personal use. An agricultural economist said official estimates of the sector's size vary widely. He argued it has always been informal and should be helped to formalise, putting its potential contribution at around R25 billion a year. The discussion also touched on the long-standing black market in the Eastern Cape and the sense that the country is leaving money on the table.
