Wednesday's local government elections dominated bulletins on every station, as special voting opened and late ballots kept more than 200 Cape Town voting stations shut at the start of the day. In the evening, stations broke news of Washington's move to cut South Africa from AGOA. A Pretoria High Court ruling overturning the national lottery licence, plus the Bosasa and Phala Phala verdicts, kept the courts in the headlines.

  1. Special voting opens amid Cape Town ballot delays

Special voting for Wednesday's local government elections got under way with more than 2.6 million voters approved, and it led bulletins on every station. In Cape Town, more than 200 voting stations could not open at 8am because ballots arrived late. The delays followed a Constitutional Court ruling that forced the reprinting of 33 million ballots, and the Western Cape's chief electoral officer apologised. The IEC conservatively estimated 780,000 special votes on day one. It also confirmed that a presiding officer collapsed and died at a Mahikeng voting station.

  2. US moves to remove South Africa from AGOA

Evening bulletins on SAfm, Cape Talk, Power FM and 702 broke the news that US President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that he intends to remove South Africa and Rwanda from AGOA from January. Washington cited trade barriers, corruption and security concerns, and the notice starts a 60-day period. US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III called it a predictable and preventable consequence of government policy. Guests on Kaya 959 and 702 noted that China is a far bigger trading partner, while Cosatu's Matthew Parks urged engagement to preserve access.

  3. Rights Commission blames systemic failures for Gauteng water crisis

The South African Human Rights Commission released its inquiry into water and sanitation in Gauteng. It found the crisis stems from systemic failures in management and distribution rather than a lack of water, pointing to technical vacancies, deteriorating infrastructure and excessive losses. 702, 947 and Kaya 959 carried the findings as Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero acknowledged that some households had gone more than ten days without water. Power FM reported that a gastrointestinal outbreak in Tshwane linked to the Bronkhorstspruit treatment works had climbed to 833 cases.

SAfm's Daily Discourse hosted Navi Pillay, introduced as a distinguished South African jurist, human rights champion and recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She recalled being barred as a child from Durban's beaches and from playing on park swings, an injustice she said drove her to gain the knowledge to fight the system of discrimination. Listeners phoned and messaged in with tributes, one praising her impact on women's rights globally and another congratulating her on the award.
