Special votes close as election-eve disruptions mount
Every station tracked the final day of special voting, with more than 1.4 million ballots cast and Gauteng leading. NatJoints reported 21 criminal cases, including murder and theft, and six arrests. Cases included people impersonating IEC officials and a group in party regalia storming an IEC storage facility in Marian Hill. Five KwaZulu-Natal IEC officials were suspended. The killing of MK party organiser Lasborne Shazi at his Umzumbe home sharpened concern about KZN hotspots. Campaigning stopped at midnight, and more than 29 million voters are registered for polls opening at 7am.
