The local government election count dominated every news bulletin. Stations tracked the ANC's slide below 31%, the scramble for coalitions in hung metros and a pile of objections ahead of Sunday's 6pm declaration. The killing of a UDM councillor in Motherwell put political violence back on air, while the Springboks' nine-try rout in Turin and weekend book and weather segments broke up the results-room coverage.

  1. ANC calls its result 'catastrophic' as coalition talks begin

With 99% of votes captured, the ANC stood on 30.9%, ahead of the DA on 24.6%, the MK Party on 9.7%, the EFF on 6.3% and ActionSA on 5.7%. The ANC has lost the lead in all eight metros, and SG Fikile Mbalula told the Midrand results centre the outcome was catastrophic. Cape Talk, 702, SAfm, Power FM and Kaya all followed the coalition manoeuvring. ActionSA cast itself as kingmaker in Gauteng, and the DA ruled out MK. The IEC reported 197 objections, with five wards ordered for recounts, while MK pressed claims of irregularities in eThekwini.

  2. UDM councillor murdered in Motherwell

Bulletins on Cape Talk and 702 led overnight with the murder of a 45-year-old UDM councillor and former Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor. His body was found in Umnulu Street, NU9, Motherwell, on Saturday afternoon. The UDM called it a senseless act of violence, said it feared the killing was politically motivated and would take it to the political killings task team. Police say the motive is under investigation. The NATJOINTS cluster recorded more than 20 political murders during the election period, and Mbalula warned that unpunished violence fuels more violence.

  3. Springboks run riot in Turin, beating Italy 66-7

Sport bulletins across Cape Talk, Kaya, 947 and SAfm celebrated a nine-try Springbok demolition of Italy in round four of the Nations Championship. The Boks scored six tries before half-time and three more after the break, with Ethan Hooker among the second-half scorers. The win keeps South Africa top of the Southern Hemisphere conference ahead of France next week. Rassie Erasmus addressed Salmaan Moerat's late withdrawal through injury, and Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada had praised the Boks for fielding full strength. Locally, Orlando Pirates edged Sekhukhune United 1-0 to reach the Carling Knockout semi-finals.

Disruptive rain is expected along the Wild Coast, while parts of the Northern Cape, North West and Limpopo face extremely high fire danger. 5. Crime novelist plans an ending for the Parker series

Cape Talk's overnight books conversation featured an author marking the 23rd Parker novel since the series began in 1999. The host joked about the few years he skipped publishing. The writer said he has long wanted to give the series a proper conclusion, arguing that the books now read like chapters in one longer narrative that deserves an ending. He joked that otherwise publishers simply hire someone to keep a dead author's name on the cover. The chat also covered troubled-teen transport practices and a recalled encounter with Wilbur Smith.
