Sport in South Africa ahead of the first ever national championships in the sport being held this weekend and next weekend, right here in Cape Town. You can also listen back to a very helpful gardening segment with Ian Domasa of Domasa Landscaping. He had a lot of advice to share with us on helping to prep the gardens for what looks to be a hot, dry summer ahead. Lots of very good advice on water-wise techniques to use in your garden. So if you missed it, please do take a listen when you have time. Up next, we take
There says protests erupted in parts of the country following the Department of Home Affairs effectively reopened South Africa's asylum system to new applicants. Tabani elaborates. This is an opportunity for Home Affairs to find out this everybody who's applying to say who is supposed to be in the country and not in the country. And who must then apply the laws of this country for those who are not supposed to be in the country. So when you are in that queue, whether you are in the queue in Clavera, in Tuane, in Durban, in Cape Town, in Usina, we are going to make sure that.
And her name is Amelia Jakops. Okay. She makes them, she's a she's a very good potter. But if you Google them, it's an ancient system and it uses like a fraction of the water. Yeah. So that's the first thing. The second thing is to look at our grey water that we can use. A lot of people approach me and they say, oh, I you know, I want to do rainwater tanks. And here in Cape Town we have these long, dry summers.
Charge, you arrive, you come and experience it. We normally, I think in the Cape Town major, we had about four or five hundred people watching. Great. So, really great spectacle. It's going to be streamed. We have a, on all our 10 courts, will be streamed via a YouTube channel that we will send out. Okay. And then the main court will actually be professionally streamed by a company called Newsroom that will actually do the streaming for us across. I mean, so.
Internationally. Okay, so you've told us where. Let's talk about the sort of spectator part of this, Paul, because I'm sure you'd love to see lots of people cheering on the competitors this weekend and next. What does one need to know if you want to come and watch the tournament? Yeah, I mean, please. Like, we had the, we organized the Cape Town Major in February. And for me, this is like I keep saying, it's all about the community. The players will play. You know, they will come, especially the top players. It's more about the lower player, to be quite honest, and it's more about the experience. We've got waffle trucks and coffee stations and giveaways.
Heard as “Cape Town Major”Ask loclYou've got 12 people playing. There's a bit of a vibe going. Yeah. You want a little bit of a coffee area. So the bigger space you have, the better. Our two clubs in Cape Town, we're very lucky. They're indoor clubs and they're under 2,000 squares under roof. So five courts each with a proper full-on restaurant, change rooms. So the bigger space you have, the more chance you've got to create that community and create that experience. Yeah. Keith asking: can you play it under lights? I frequently see some of the clubs that spots lights on, yeah.
And schools and then interprovincials and so on. Do we have any schools as far as you know offering paddle as a sport? Yeah, so there's some schools that have land available and they've already built courts. Okay. And I think with the view going, they need to make sure that they offer it as a school. The clubs are the schools that don't have space, which is quite substantial. And I'm just going to name some in Cape Town, let's say, for example, like Sachs or Wynberg or Bishops, or there's lots of them. They don't actually have the land, so therefore, they will tip.
Cattle paddle courts, how much appetite is there for this? And I remember doing an interview a year or two ago where somebody said, Oh, you know, don't rush, it might just be a passing phase. I think we can safely say they were wrong. Paul Atkinson, my guest who is in studio with us today, is smiling wryly at that comment. He's the co-owner of Paddle 365, and he's here to tell us about the first ever national paddle championships, the Growth Point SA National Paddle Championships happening here in Cape Town this weekend and next weekend, bringing together the country.
In the queue, in Clebeja, in Tuane, in Durban, in Cape Town, in Mucina. We are going to make sure that if you do not qualify to be in the country in terms of the asylum status or any other provisions that allows you to be here, we are going to make sure that we get you out of this country. Deputy Police Minister Pauli Bushiello says they have noted the Constitutional Court's judgment over certain provisions of the refugee.
Eyewitness News Parliament. A house robber has been killed, and another is under police guard in hospital following a home invasion in the Crawford area in Athlone in Cape Town. The incident happened at nine o'clock last night. The police's Wesley Twiggs says a gunman demanded cash. The victims were tied up. We can confirm that shots were fired, and one suspect was fatally wounded. A suspect who was also wounded was later arrested and is in hospital under police guard. The circumstances surrounding the incident is
Year-old schoolboy Jason Rawls fetched the highest individual bid of 2.9 million rand at the SA20 auction ahead of the fifth edition of the tournament. Rolls, an all-rounder, will play for the Joburg Super Kings, who also got former SA captain Fuff Duplessis for 2.7 million rand. My Cape Town spent 2.6 million rand on Proteus' all-rounder Vian Mulda and 1.5 million to bring back New Zealand left-arm seamer Trent Bolt. And lastly, Manchester will stage the Nepal World Cup in 2031. That's after England was awarded.

System. Actually, this is an opportunity for Home Affairs to find out this everybody who's applying to say who is supposed to be in the country and not in the country. Traits or attributes in terms of their party mandates. But where you find the DA and the ANC leading in local government, you would see perhaps with the influence of the court judgment that came in recently now about the DA in Cape Town. It tells you that DA matter, in fact, when it comes to party mandates or issues that need to address, perhaps challenges of society that are previously disadvantaged, it's not well aligned to most parties that it's leading with, perhaps in local government.
Terms of skills in our country. So let me ask you: this is an example of one of our other experiences, advocate Machele. She says, Hi, Joanne. As a skilled white South African who hasn't found work since 2020, I recently applied for a job, but they hired a foreign black worker on the basis of employment equity instead. But that person isn't South African and was never disadvantaged by apartheid. Was this legal? asks Jen in Cape Town. Can you repeat that?
you know, all of us and all many of us feel. As a contractor, I'm had to go to from Fishook to Simonstown, to Seapoint, Greenpoint, and other parts of the of the Cape Town. It's hitting me quite badly, the price of the petrol. You know, and of course many other people gonna also be affected. Who are not affected as as much and actually they make a profit, Sasso and other companies who manufactures this
We service vulnerable people and we have to service them with dignity and respect at all times. And so we apologize for areas where you would have gone, Honorable Chair, and you find that there are staff members who are very rude. Noting MP's complaints that SASA's biometric verification system is adding another layer of hardship for the elderly, Poule said the vetting is necessary to root out fraud and to spare the
Offices, they still have a long way to go. Sassa's CEO estimates that on average applicants are not waiting more than 15 minutes to be helped, but Pule has singled out major offices in Cape Town as the most problematic. MPs serving on the Social Development Committee say they are inundated with complaints and appeals for help to access grants. They have highlighted concerns about the way staff treat applicants and beneficiaries, prompting new Minister Dina Pule to agree with them.
Are respected and protected during their temporal stay in the kingdom. Two law enforcement officers in Cape Town are recovering in hospital after an alleged domestic dispute. Both sustained serious gunshot wounds during the incident in Electric City on the Cape Flats yesterday. Police spokesperson Andre Trart says the motive for the dispute is under investigation. Shots were discharged, resulting in both 40-year-old parties sustaining injuries. Both are receiving medical treatment in hospital.
Social media misinformation on the Constitutional Court judgment into asylum seekers' refugee status. Kubai was addressing members of the media via video link from Caetown. This comes as protest erupted in parts of the country after the Department of Home Affairs effectively reopened South Africa's asylum system to new applicants. Kubai says the application process will continue to be conducted within the confines of South African law. The judgment does not grant refugee status.
Heard as “Caetown”Ask loclAnd I'm sitting down in a buzzing hotel breakfast room, but it's in our mother city, not Caetown, Durban etiquette. And I just feel the absolute joy of your blossoming, your generous heart, your way with words. That is poetry, without a doubt. I love you, and I can imagine you dancing in the studio with Clement. And I'm here for any opportunity to honor and celebrate your generation.
Heard as “Caetown”Ask loclSaw that one coming, but anyway, so let's quickly check where this place is. First of all, it's quite a colorful facade in terms of the building, so very hard to miss with those orange colors. Okay, it is a place that is found in, is it Skoochta Kluf in Cape Town? I hope I pronounced that correctly. Forgive me if you're from that part of the world, but they do pride themselves in authentic South African and
Do on-site separation and they get organic waste, they digest it in with digester and they can use it to produce biogas. And other municipalities like Cape Town and Durban are also doing something similar. So we could actually kill two birds with one stone and reduce the wastage in our landfills if we actually engaged in more methane extraction processes? Absolutely right. Yes.
Those two. All right, TT, maybe you need to tell us where you're at. My name is TT. I forget dinner here when I'm in the city. What you're looking for on today's Spotted is Marco's African Place in Cape Town. Ciao. Oh, okay. So, damn. Somebody did get it right. I think it's Masla Aku. Marco's African Plates in Cape Town. Okay. Never saw that one coming? Never.
Said Carnivore in Molders Drift. Am I right? Am I wrong? Do you have a different view? The restaurant is Manos in Santon City. Manos. African Place in Cape Town. Oh, so we're going all the way to Cape Town. Okay. Quite a stretch and a distance between Santon, as Martin pointed out, and Cape Town, as Mashlaku pointed out. But yeah, the question is: which one is it? If at all, any of
Of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, Minister Mabuloko Kubai has sought to clarify the Constitutional Court judgment into asylum seekers. The Kingdom of Eswatini says the three third country nationals who were deported from the United States have left the kingdom, as well as reports that the deportees were secretly released to South Africa. An SAPS officer and a city of Cape Town law enforcement officer recovering in hospital after an alleged domestic dispute, which resulted in both sustaining serious gunshot wounds in electricity.
Heard as “city of Cape Town”Ask loclOn Delaray South at Radnor Street, and in Paul, there's an accident on the R44 and Vintmuel Road. Traffic is slow moving at Kubik Interchange onto the elevated freeway, and on the N2 incoming traffic slows down at Jansmuts Drive to the M5. Clear skies are forecast for the city today with a low of 12 and a high of 20 degrees. The top story this hour. The city of Cape Town says it's investing in intelligence-led policing to strengthen its new SWAT team.
This, this is EWN. Good morning, I'm Nathalie Malkas. The City of Cape Town says it's investing in intelligence-led policing to strengthen its new SWAT unit. The City Administration believes this unit will be more effective than the current deployment of the SANDF. Safety and Security MMC JP Smith says the team that's been in training for more than two years will be deployed to incidents.
We're a non-profit. We had an office in Cape Town in Nisenberg. And we're a mental health promotion and prevention service. We're evidence-based and we're evidence-led, and we use sports and play-based physical activities to help children and adolescents who come from, as I said, underserved communities to build resilience before adversity becomes a real crisis for them. Yes.
In the city of Cape Town. So I'd like them to talk more so about the role of opposition in the benches, in the chambers. And they need to raise the bar on that particular front because when they raise the bar, we are better informed as a community in Cape Town. I don't know if you've got thoughts on these matters, but you're welcome. Let's engage via WhatsApp at 072-567-1567. That's a WhatsApp number. And you can call anytime at 02146-0567. We'll prioritize your call.
Without a mayoral chain. And I think the big and important thing is for them to be as committed to the mayoral chain as they are to opposition. And I think the big issue for me yesterday was that the opposition in this particular city, especially the city of Cape Town, has been, of course, civil society and the media. We haven't heard really important questions being raised by other political parties and other interest groups that are represented.
Everybody. And I just want to know now: if you go into the Department of Home Affairs now, are you going to tell us that you murdered somebody in Cape Town? Now you come into the home affairs of Jogak, are you going to reveal everything? You're going to tell us the truth, where you're coming from, and all those things. I don't think you're going to do that. And while we're all arguing about this thing, these people are actually departmentalizing crime in our country. And if I come to you now and tell you that the
Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee Ian Cameron says he'll be pursuing parliamentary oversight after a senior Cape Town police officer facing criminal charges was promoted. Cameron has expressed his concern about SAPS officer Dalmo Maniel being promoted from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel and formally appointed as assassin commander at Musenberg Police Station. We'll have more on these and other stories at 10 or as it happens.

Of the CASA regulation governing the election period, the views expressed in this political election broadcast are those of the political party and not of the SABC. The daily discourse: more than talk, real understanding. It's just gone 22 past nine, and Bunakele in Cape Town has patiently been waiting to speak to me. Good morning, Bunakele. Hi, very good morning. I'm smiling, you know, because I'm checking your chance. Can you believe? While I'm
A particular question and ask other people different questions, that people feel they're treated differently and that one party has been shown favoritism over another. So they've tried to keep it as standardised as possible. But I will give that feedback to the morning team. And perhaps it's something to consider getting more of the independents into the conversation. Thank you. Thank you very much for that, John. Ngonde in Cape Town is on the line to us. Good morning, Ngonde. Hi. JJ.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the city's future depends on creating more pathways into meaningful work, particularly for young people. What makes this project so important is that it connects training directly to professional practice by developing performers.
Mark Cathy says water seeps into her shack whenever it rains, damaging her furniture and belongings. She had this to say when asked about her vote in the upcoming elections. Good morning, Cape Town, up against the flash driver Carl Westie. It's me and Natalie on a team up against Carl and Cassie. Please be there. Please come and support Good Morning Cape Town. We really, really need it. But that's the show. Clarence Ford is up next. And views and news. I'm back tomorrow for the Friday edition.
Of October, that Badal Challenge, Cape Talk. Good morning, Cape Town, up against the flash driving Carl Wastie of KFM. But coach, how was I? Fantastic. Don't just tell me. Listen, turned up and played like a prime Rafael Nadal. Let me just put that out there. My jaw is on the floor. Jaw was on the floor because why? Muscle memory came back. Street tennis, swing.
In a serious right now, garden roots, right? And that was a similar project to a Swartland where they're going to do township establishment, urban renewal, and build a whole precinct around there based on the racetrack, I think, somewhere in Gaber. However, I think they didn't end up submitting their bid. So the Cape Town story, it's been there all along. And like I say, with this consortium. Well, there were different consortiums.
During the initial bidding year that was run by the committee put together by the Minister of Sport? So, my understanding was that there were four bids submitted. Three of those four bids were proposing Cape Town. Is that right? Sorry, five bids. So, three of the five were proposing Cape Town. There was another bid for Wakanda City, which was going to be somewhere in the Wakanda City.
Message that is being sent though, but I still can't get my head around how they would execute. But again, as I keep saying, I've been saying on air that if anyone can pull off something like that on this continent, like start a track and host the races within three and a half years, Rwanda is definitely that country. But just going back to this Cape Town bid, this Swatland bid here, I mean, where did that come from? Were they there when we were?
It's Swartland. I would start there with the changes. I mean, it's not giving, right? And then while Cape Town readies itself, year six, year seven, after we've had the race here for four or five years, we could then move it there, which would then level up and iron out all the gremlins. Because, you know, the Cape Town is very ambitious, but I don't know if five years is enough to build a whole smart city and get the track approved.
And submitted their plans to say, here's the design, because they are actually building a purpose-built racetrack, which is something like Kailami, as opposed to the street circuit, which Formula One seems to favor these days. And even with Cape Town, they favor Cape Town, rumor has it, at the top, because of the backdrop, table mountain, beautiful city, etc. It'd be like Monaco in Africa. Exactly. But the truth of the matter is, Formula One is about its.
McKenzie, the bid that we submitted for on behalf of South Africa didn't meet certain requirements. So, Formula One group then said, go fix A, B, C, D, E. And that's what they're working on now. And jiggy jiggy, the Caetown bid comes into play. This is messy, you know. Because there's a, it points to a lack of coordination. I mean, first of all, when it was the
Heard as “Caetown”Ask loclAnd they've put together the finance about $402 million. Goodness. Which that is staggering. And includes the development costs, because, like you say, the external stuff that needs to go into preparing for F1 needs to be in place. So, because now there's this tug of war between Joeberg and Cape Town, last year there was the committee that was set up by our minister and they submitted a bid to the Formula One.
A tug of war. We are divided in our aspirations to host the F1. Divided how? There's these two potential host cities in Johannesburg at Kailami, of course. And then there is Caetown. I'm sure they announced two weeks ago where they said that they're preparing an independent bid that will propose to host the F1 in Swartland in Cape Town in 2020.

In our final test in Cape Town eight years ago, cameras spotted a camera at Bancroft roughing up the ball with sandpaper to make it swing in flight. And now Simon Harmas says that he can only speak as a fan over that incident and that series in its entirety. That series which caused Captain Steve Smith and Vice Captain David Warner to both be sanctioned over the matter.

Should have been protected. It wasn't. So I don't buy the story because there is an MMC in a position who should have anticipated this. Crime was another major concern with parties offering different plans to improve policing and public safety. Tan Sheng Nobo, eyewitness news. Clear sky is a forecast for the city today with a gentle west-northwesterly breeze, a low of 12 and a high of 20 degrees. The top story this hour: the city of Cape Town says it's investing.
Are bracing for a bruising battle up front when they face the Stormers in Saturday's United Rugby Derby in Cape Town. The Durban side have won both their opening matches, including an impressive victory over the defending champions Leinster. But forwards coach Philip Lemmer expects a very different challenge at scrum time, comparing the contest between the two packs to a battle between brothers. It's going to be a battle, I said to the forts as well this week. It's almost like the two.
Appearing before Parliament's Portfolio Committee yesterday, Boulev said while there had been notable service improvements at many of SASA's offices, there was still a long way to go. While SASA CEO Temba McLaw estimates that an average applicant were not waiting for more than 15 minutes to be helped, Boulev singled out major offices in Cape Town are still problematic. Lindsay Tentlinker has more. MPs serving on the Social Development Committee say they are inundated with complaints and appeals for help to act.
