SAFM marked 90 years by revisiting its origin in 1936, its evolution from Radio South Africa to SAFM in 1995, and its role as a trusted news-and-talk home in a changing country.

Guests repeatedly credited SAFM with informing, educating and connecting South Africans, calling it a platform for independent journalism, public discourse and voices that shaped national memory.

The station’s history was framed as inseparable from the country’s political transition: apartheid-era broadcasting, the release of Nelson Mandela, democratic elections and the birth of a new SAFM in 1995.
