The programme reconstructed 11 September 2001 through archival broadcasts: four hijacked aircraft, the collapse of both Twin Towers, and nearly 3,000 deaths within hours.

Within a month the United States invaded Afghanistan, followed Iraq 18 months later; the wars lasted decades, killed hundreds of thousands and cost more than $8 trillion.

Former diplomat Brooks Spector said neither invasion was inevitable, warning that ideological certainty and poor analysis can drain national treasure, reputations and economic strength.
