The Madlanga Commission’s first anniversary brought fresh allegations of JMPD collusion, prison-linked criminal networks and urgent calls for independent vetting and institutional reform.

1. 18:10

   JMPD internal affairs told the Commission that Tactical Response Unit officers allegedly redirected copper-laden trucks to criminal syndicates, abandoned drug pursuits and protected criminals.

   Three TRU officers allegedly stole about R85,000 from a Zimbabwean woman, detained her and her brother, and threatened them with a fabricated money-laundering charge.

   World Bank expert Laura Popp said vetting will only work if the evaluation body is independent and credible, with scrutiny of finances, associations, conflicts and past conduct.

   Correctional Services evidence indicated prison gangs recruit younger inmates, while prisoners allegedly direct outside assassinations and criminal operations through compromised officials.

   The Commission has heard 174 days of evidence from 110 witnesses, with testimony due to end on 2 October and Faraz Khan scheduled to testify on 28 September.
